Material and Workmanship

The carafe and both cups feature the same continuous ornament: blossoms and tendrils in silver hand-engraving, filled with niello and melted in an open flame. Strong gold accents create highlights in between — gilded flower centers, gilded borders on the rim of the cups, and a lid finial completely crafted in fine gold on the carafe. This triple gilding is one of the more elaborate designs in the SevChern range: gold on top, gold on the bottom, gold in the flower centers, and the cups are additionally fully gilded inside — each gold element is applied individually. Niello is not a color or coating, but a silver-copper-sulfur alloy that chemically and physically bonds with the silver and becomes more contrasting with each polish. The set is manufactured by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, where the niello tradition has been documented since 1683.
