A saucer that speaks for itself: 925 sterling silver, gilded rim, and a geometric niello engraving in a quadrille design. Material and Workmanship
The quadrille design is symmetrically geometric and forms a band around the polished silver center on the rim of the saucer. The niello engraving—a fused sulfur alloy in engraved grooves—creates the characteristic pattern, which is further highlighted by the gilding. Niello is one of the oldest engraving techniques in the world: unlike enamel, which lies on the surface as an applied glass, the niello mass sits directly in the silver and changes with the piece instead of wearing away. SevChern manufactures this saucer in the proven combination of silver, gold, and niello, which is characteristic of tableware from Russian silversmithing.
Use and Occasions
With a diameter of 110 mm and a height of 12 mm, the saucer is designed for common coffee and tea cups. It can be used individually or combined as an addition to SevChern's Quadrille collection. The gilding gives the piece a warm tone that suits both dark coffee crockery and light porcelain cups. The saucer also works as a coaster for ordinary porcelain or ceramic cups, as a jewelry dish, or as a purely decorative object—silver also looks good on the table as a single piece, without everything having to be served in a complete set. As a gift, a gilded silver saucer is an unusual but sensible choice for anyone who appreciates silver tableware: for a birthday, an anniversary, or as a housewarming gift for people who appreciate table culture.
Engraving and SilberVerse Card
Upon request, a personal engraving is possible, turning the saucer into an individualized gift. We are happy to include a SilberVerse card in photo format 15 × 10 cm landscape, currently free of charge and individually inscribed—simply specify the desired text when purchasing.
Care
Clean the saucer with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Not dishwasher safe—this will preserve the gilding and niello permanently. For light tarnishing, a silver polishing cloth only helps on silver, ungilded surfaces. Do not use silver dip, as it will attack the gilding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the saucer without a matching silver cup?
Yes. The saucer also works as a coaster for normal porcelain or ceramic cups, as a jewelry dish, or as a decorative object. Silver on the table also works as a single piece—not everything has to be served in a set.
How does the niello technique differ from other silver decorations?
Niello is one of the oldest engraving techniques in the world, where a sulfur alloy is permanently fused into engraved grooves. Unlike enamel, an applied glass, the niello sits directly in the silver. It changes with the piece, is cared for, and ages gracefully.
Are silver saucers also available as a housewarming gift?
A gilded silver saucer is an original housewarming gift for people who appreciate table culture—a noble alternative to classic household goods.
