Material and workmanship

The carafe has a bulbous shape, with a C-handle, wide spout, and a lid with a ring knob – classically proportioned and intended for daily use, not just for display. Made of 925 sterling silver, unplated, it features niello hand-engraving that differs significantly from most other patterns in the range: instead of a uniform ornamental band, a vine freely stretches across the surface – it begins at the base, twists diagonally upwards, branches out, and continues, just as a real vine grows. The leaves are naturalistically crafted with recognizable veins, and the grapes hang in small, round clusters.

Each line of this composition was hand-engraved into the silver, then the dark niello paste was melted into the engraved depressions. The result is not a color or lacquer, but a chemical-physical bond with the silver itself – one can imagine it like ink that permanently soaks into the metal. With each polishing, the contrasts deepen; the vine becomes more contrasted, not paler, over the years. The carafe is manufactured by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, where niello art has been documented since 1683; each piece undergoes approximately 15 production steps there.

Use and occasions

With 1,550 ml, the carafe holds about two bottles of wine or water for six to eight guests at a long table – it belongs on tables where something is being celebrated: weddings, significant anniversaries, company parties, or as the centerpiece of a festive dinner. The oval field amidst the vines is part of the original design and intended to accommodate a personal emblem – a monogram, a family crest, a winery logo, or a company signet. Those who leave the field blank retain a piece with independent, narrative ornamentation; those who fill it turn the carafe into a representative table piece with a personal signature.

Care

Clean by hand with mild detergent and lukewarm water; do not put in the dishwasher. Do not scrub the niello surfaces; a soft cloth is sufficient for daily use. Dry thoroughly after rinsing. Occasional polishing with a silver polishing cloth deepens the contrast between silver and niello over the years.
