Material and workmanship

The carafe is crafted from 925 sterling silver, pear-shaped in the body, with a slender, tapering neck. A trumpet-shaped spout ensures a clean, drip-free pour, a curved C-handle sits securely in the hand, and the lid closes with a round spherical knob. On the belly, a broad frieze of large, circular rosettes — mandala-shaped blossoms, symmetrically and geometrically floral in structure, alternates with a delicate zigzag border. At the neck, the floral theme is repeated in a small rectangular field with grapes and tendrils. No gold, no gilding — only pure 925 sterling silver and the deep niello black create the full effect.

Niello is not a color or lacquer, but a dark metal alloy that is melted by hand into each engraved line, forming a chemical-physical bond with the silver — one can imagine it like ink that permanently absorbs into the metal. A piece requires around 15 working steps until the rosettes shine with such depth. With polishing, the contrasts even become clearer over time — the carafe becomes more beautiful the more often it is used. It is manufactured by SevChern, a manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, where the art of niello has been documented since 1683.
