Description
A square base under nine arms — that's the only difference from the other Chanukkiot in this line, and it changes more than one might expect.
At a Glance
- 925 sterling silver Chanukkia, nine candleholders
- Height approx. 69 cm
- Silver weight approx. 3.55 kg — the heaviest piece of the four
- Square, quatrefoil-shaped base
- Shamash elevated on the central shaft, with flame finial
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — Manufacture since 1948
Nine Arms — And Why That's No Minor Detail
Chanukkah lasts for eight nights, and on each night, one more light is lit. Hence, eight lights. The ninth arm holds the Shamash, the "servant": it is used to light the others, as the eight themselves are meant only for observation. Because it doesn't count, it is visibly set apart.
The Menorah, in contrast, has seven arms and refers to the Temple candelabrum. Both are constantly confused — even in catalogs. Zaramella itself lists all four nine-armed pieces as "Menorah, 9 Lights," which is a contradiction in terms. We name them professionally and correctly.
What the Square Base Changes
Round bases are the norm for candelabras because they distribute weight evenly. A square base with curved sides — as here — does the same, but introduces a straight line into the piece.
On a windowsill, this is a distinct advantage: the edge of the base aligns with the edge of the frame, instead of contrasting with it. On a round side table, it would be the opposite.
At approx. 3.55 kg, this is also the heaviest of the four models — more silver than the large 76 cm version, although it is seven centimeters shorter. The weight is in the solid base and the sturdy shaft.
Overview of the Selection
- this one, approx. 69 cm — square base, heaviest piece
- the large one, approx. 76 × 50 cm — round base, widest span
- Small, approx. 65 × 43 cm — round base, most compact design
- Mini Signature, approx. 68 × 42 cm — slimmest shaft, lightest piece
Those who are torn between this and the large version decide not on size, but on the shape of the base: round or angular.
By the Window
Chanukkah includes Pirsumei Nisa — the miracle should be publicized, the lights should be visible from outside. The usual place is therefore the window or near the door.
Especially here, the square base plays to its advantage. On a windowsill, it sits flush, without the rounded gap that a round base leaves at the edge — not just an aesthetic point for a piece with burning candles.
After the Eight Evenings
Chanukkah is over, the piece remains. At 3.55 kg and 69 cm, it would be absurd to store it — and it's not worth it: the curved base with its intricate chasing is the most elaborate work on this candelabrum and only truly comes into its own when left on display.
On a sideboard or in a display cabinet with a tall compartment, the piece is read as architecture: angular plinth, vertical shaft, horizontal row. An order that functions year-round.
Candles
Standard size taper candles. If you wish to use oil, specialized glass inserts are available. Remove wax after short cooling, without tools — silver is softer than steel, and every scratch remains.
Engraving
The square base offers four straight fields — the most favorable engraving area of all four models. Where a round edge would require a dedication to curve, it runs straight here. We coordinate size and position in advance and include a SilverVerse card upon request.
Care
By hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher. Use a soft brush for the curved base parts, and a narrow cloth for the arches. Tarnishing is reversible; the darker depth in the recesses is part of the piece. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and tableware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a Menorah?
No. Nine arms with an elevated Shamash signify a Chanukkia; the Menorah has seven and refers to the Temple candelabrum. The manufacturer's catalog uses the term "Menorah" inaccurately.
Why is it heavier than the larger version?
The weight is in the solid square base. At approx. 3.55 kg, it surpasses the 76 cm Chanukkia at approx. 3.25 kg, even though it is shorter.
What candles fit?
Standard size taper candles; for oil, glass inserts are available from specialty retailers.
Is it available with a round base?
Yes — as a large version at approx. 76 cm, as a Small at approx. 65 cm, and as a Mini Signature.
Is it kosher?
We offer silver ritual objects and describe their use — we cannot provide religious legal information. Questions regarding ritual suitability should be directed to your community.
Does it come in gift packaging?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
