Description
Children's Spoon 925 Silver — Niello Rabbit with Drum, Gilt
This children's spoon made of 925 Sterling Silver combines two of the oldest finishing techniques in silversmithing: niello engraving and partial gilding. In the spoon bowl sits a gilded rabbit with a drum — a cheerful motif full of zest for life. At the end of the handle, a finely crafted niello floral motif in a teardrop-shaped frame adorns the stem. Both sides tell their own story, both have been refined by the silversmiths of the SevChern manufactory in over 15 steps. Unlike a baby spoon, this children's spoon is larger — designed for children who are already eating independently and deserve their first own silver cutlery.

Niello Technique — One of the Oldest Finishing Arts in the World
Niello is a finishing technique that has been practiced since antiquity and is now almost extinct in Europe. The principle: a dark alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur is inlaid into previously engraved ornaments. There, it permanently bonds with the silver, creating a deep, velvety contrast between the dark lines and the bright silver surface.
What sounds simple requires over 15 different individual processes: The silver is cast, ground, and polished. Then, the artist hand-engraves the ornament into the surface — line by line, with traditional engraving tools. The niello compound is mixed separately, heated, and applied into the engraved lines. After cooling, the surface is ground again until only the dark filling in the depressions remains visible. Each transition between silver and niello is individually reworked. This is followed by partial gilding — for the rabbit in the spoon bowl, gold was selectively applied to make the motif glow warmly.
Throughout Europe, only a few manufactories still practice this technique. The SevChern workshop in Russia is one of the last places where niello silver is produced with such quality and depth of detail. Each piece bears the artist's manufactory mark — visible as a hallmark on the stem.
Design — Two Sides, Two Stories
Spoon Bowl: The Gilded Rabbit with Drum
If you turn the spoon over, a gilded rabbit playing a drum appears on the inside of the bowl. The gilding makes the motif stand out warmly and brightly from the surrounding silver. The rabbit is engraved using the niello technique — its contours are inlaid as dark lines into the silver, while the surfaces shimmer golden. The interplay of dark niello, warm gold, and cool silver creates a three-dimensionality that would be unattainable with machine production.
Handle End: The Niello Floral Motif
At the top end of the stem sits a teardrop-shaped frame with a finely engraved floral motif. Here, the dark niello lines dominate on the light silver background — a classic niello ornament that shows the tradition of this finishing art in its purest form. The blossom is symmetrically constructed, each line hand-engraved into the silver and filled with the dark alloy. The teardrop-shaped frame gives the motif an elegant boundary and forms a harmonious finish to the spoon handle.
Motif Symbolism — The Rabbit with Drum
For centuries, the rabbit has symbolized joy of life, fertility, and new beginnings in many cultures. It is a creature of spring, a messenger of new life — and thus a particularly fitting motif for a children's gift. Whoever gives a rabbit as a gift expresses a silent wish: May your life be full of joy and new beginnings.
The rabbit on this spoon carries a drum — a detail that adds an extra dimension to the motif. The drum stands for rhythm, joy, and the beat of life. A drumming rabbit is not a silent symbol, but a cheerful companion who invites the child to discover the world with enthusiasm. It is a motif that radiates lightness and is at the same time deeply rooted in the symbolism of new beginnings.
Material and Origin — SevChern Manufactory
The children's spoon is made of solid 925 Sterling Silver — food-safe, nickel-free, and value-retaining for generations. The official 925 hallmarking is visible on the stem and confirms the silver content. The partial gilding in the area of the rabbit motif is done with real gold, which is permanently bonded to the silver.
Each spoon is created in the SevChern Manufactory — one of the last active niello workshops worldwide. Here, silversmiths and engravers work who have passed down this technique through generations. Production is in small batches, customized, and with the aim of refining each piece to the highest standard. The artist's manufactory mark on the stem documents who created this spoon — a personal sign of the responsible artisan, not an anonymous factory seal.
Children's Spoon vs. Baby Spoon — The Difference
This spoon is designed as a children's spoon and is therefore larger than a classic baby spoon. If you are looking for a smaller model with the same rabbit motif: The baby spoon SW10451 also features a gilded niello rabbit of the same SevChern quality, but is sized for the very first meals and younger children. The children's spoon SW10487 is suitable for children who are already eating independently and need a larger piece of cutlery — a natural next step after the baby spoon.
Occasions and Target Groups
A children's spoon made of niello silver is not an everyday gift — it is a piece of silversmithing that will accompany its recipient throughout their life. Particularly suitable for:
- Birthday: As a first own silver cutlery for the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd birthday — the transition from baby spoon to children's spoon
- Christening: A lasting christening gift with the symbolism of the rabbit — new beginnings and joy of life
- Birth: As an elevated gift from grandparents or godparents, looking ahead to the coming years
- Name Day: A keepsake that outlasts its owner's name
For grandparents, who are looking for a gift of lasting value — one that won't disappear in the toy box.
For godparents, who want to give something extraordinary for a christening or birthday.
For parents, who want to give their child a piece of silversmithing that will last for years.
Engraving Note and SilberVerse Card
Due to the double-sided niello embellishment, engraving is not possible for this spoon. Both sides — the spoon bowl with the gilded rabbit and the handle end with the floral motif — bear elaborate niello ornaments that cannot be overwritten without damaging the finish.
SilberVerse Card — Your personal gift card: Even without engraving, you can add a personal touch to this gift. Upon request, we will design an individual SilberVerse Card in photo format (10×15 cm) — suitable for the occasion, the recipient, and with your personal message. Each card is unique. Simply specify your wishes when ordering. Currently free of charge.
Care — Proper Treatment of Niello Silver
Niello silver requires particularly gentle care to ensure that the dark ornaments and gilding are preserved in the long term:
- Cleaning: Exclusively by hand with warm water and mild dish soap. Then dry with a soft cotton cloth.
- Avoid silver immersion baths: Aggressive immersion baths can attack the niello filling and damage the gilding. Instead, use a soft silver polishing cloth for the polished silver surfaces.
- Not dishwasher safe: The combination of heat, chemicals, and water pressure would damage both niello and gilding.
- Patina is desired: Slight signs of wear on the polished silver surfaces develop into a natural patina that gives the spoon character over the years. The niello ornaments themselves remain permanently preserved.
- Storage: Store dry, ideally wrapped in a soft cloth. Avoid contact with rubber, sulfur, or salty substances.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is niello and is it safe for health?
Niello is a dark alloy that is inlaid into engraved ornaments — a finishing technique practiced since antiquity. After firing, the niello compound is firmly bonded to the silver and completely stable. 925 Sterling Silver itself is food-safe and nickel-free. The spoon is safe to use as cutlery for children.
Why is engraving not possible?
Both sides of the spoon feature elaborate niello embellishments: the gilded rabbit in the bowl and the floral motif at the end of the handle. Engraving would damage the niello filling and the gilding. As a personal alternative, we offer the free SilberVerse Card — an individually designed gift card in photo format.
What does the rabbit motif with a drum mean?
The rabbit symbolizes joy of life, fertility, and new beginnings — one of the most positive animal motifs in European and Russian symbolism. The drum adds the meaning of rhythm and joy. Together, they stand for a child who discovers the world with enthusiasm.
How does this children's spoon differ from the baby spoon SW10451?
Both spoons feature the same gilded niello rabbit and come from the SevChern manufactory. The difference lies in the size: SW10487 is larger as a children's spoon and is suitable for children who are already eating independently. The baby spoon SW10451 is smaller and designed for the first meals.
Can I reorder the spoon or is it only available in limited quantities?
The SevChern manufactory produces in small quantities, but each model can be reordered. It is not a one-time edition. Production involving over 15 steps takes time — if unavailable, please contact us for an order inquiry.
