Description
Dessert Spoon 925 Silver Gilt — Squirrel with Niello Ornament from Russian Manufactory
This 925 Sterling Silver dessert spoon is fully gilded and combines two finishing techniques in a single piece: on the inside of the spoon bowl sits a gilded squirrel — upright, with a bushy tail and a nut in its paws, surrounded by swirling tendrils and floral ornaments. The gold engraving stands out in fine lines from the polished silver of the bowl. At the end of the handle, on both sides, is a teardrop-shaped niello floral ornament — dark lines in engraved silver, forming a high-contrast frame to the warm gold of the spoon. Crafted in the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug — one of the last workshops worldwide that still performs niello finishing of this quality.
✦ Material: 925 Sterling Silver, fully gilded, niello ornamentation
✦ Dimensions: Length approx. 16.8 cm · Width approx. 3.9 cm · Weight approx. 46 g
✦ Manufacturer: SevChern — Russian niello manufactory
✦ Engraving: Not possible — surface fully finished (niello + gilding)
✦ Scope of delivery: 1 dessert spoon in gift box
✦ Hallmarking: 925 silver hallmark and artist's manufactory mark
✦ Note: Dessert spoon size (16.8 cm) — larger than the children's spoons of the Niello series (13 cm)
Design — Squirrel in Gold, Floral Ornament in Niello
The spoon bowl features the squirrel as the central figure. It sits upright on a branch, its bushy tail curled upwards, holding a nut between its front paws. Around the figure, floral ornaments entwine — swirling lines, leaves, and volutes that fill the entire inner surface of the bowl. The engraving is executed in fine gold lines and forms a detailed image that reveals its full depth only upon closer inspection.
At the end of the handle, on both sides, is a teardrop-shaped niello ornament: a stylized flower with leaves and tendrils, embedded in an almond-shaped frame. The dark niello lines contrast with the polished silver, which has been left free of gilding here — a deliberate change that visually sets the handle end apart from the golden stem.
The full gilding distinguishes this dessert spoon from the children's spoons of the Niello series, where only the bowl motif is gilded. Here, the gold extends over the entire stem and bowl — only the niello ornaments at the end of the handle retain their typical silver-black combination. The result is a spoon whose warm gold tone immediately catches the eye.
The Squirrel Motif — Diligence, Foresight, and Joy of Life
The squirrel is one of the few animal motifs that are positively connoted in almost all cultures. It symbolizes diligence, foresight, and wise precaution — qualities that parents and godparents wish for a child. The squirrel collects in autumn what it needs in winter. It plans ahead without losing the joy of the moment.
In Slavic folk art, the squirrel holds a special place. It is considered a symbol of prosperity and energy — a nimble, skillful animal that inspires admiration with its dexterity. In fairy tales and legends, it often appears as a wise advisor or a messenger of the forest.
For a gift at birth, baptism, or a first birthday, the squirrel carries a special message: Be diligent, think ahead, but don't forget to enjoy life. An encouragement that lasts far beyond the occasion. And with its playful, upright posture on the spoon bowl, it brings a smile to every meal — a motif that appeals to children and delights adults.
What is Niello? — The Oldest Finishing Technique for Silver
Niello is an alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is applied as a dark paste into previously engraved ornaments. The process is one of the oldest finishing techniques for precious metals — archaeological findings prove its use as early as antiquity. The production of a single niello piece involves over 15 individual work processes: First, the motif is engraved into the silver. Then, the niello mass is prepared, heated, and melted into the engraved lines. After cooling, the surface is ground, polished, and — where intended — partially or fully gilded.
In Europe, this technique is rarely practiced today. The SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Russia, is one of the last workshops that performs niello of this quality and tradition. The city has been the center of Russian niello art since the 17th century. Each spoon bears the hallmark of the executing artist — a sign of individual responsibility for the finished piece.
Dessert Spoon vs. Children's Spoon — Format and Use
With a length of 16.8 cm and a weight of approx. 46 g, this dessert spoon is significantly larger and heavier than the children's spoons of the Niello series (13 cm, approx. 23 g). The wider bowl (3.9 cm) is suitable for desserts, yogurt, muesli, or soups — it is a full-fledged dessert spoon that children of school age and adults alike can use.
Many families acquire the dessert spoon as a supplement to a children's spoon from the same Niello series — the smaller spoon for the first few years, the larger one for later. Others deliberately choose it as a collector's item or as a representative individual piece for their display cabinet. The full gilding and the elaborate squirrel motif make it one of the most decorative pieces in the SevChern collection.

Engraving Service
This dessert spoon cannot be engraved due to the double-sided niello ornaments and the complete gilding. The spoon bowl features the squirrel motif, and the handle end has floral ornaments — there is no free space for an engraving without compromising the overall artistic impression.
SilberVerse Card — our personal gift card: Even without engraving, you can give this gift a personal touch. Upon request, we will design an individual SilberVerse Card in photo format (10×15 cm) — suitable for the occasion, the recipient, and with your personal message. Each card is unique. Simply state your wish when ordering, and we will contact you to coordinate the details. Currently free of charge.
Material and Care
The spoon is made of solid 925 Sterling Silver and bears the official silver hallmark as well as the artist's manufactory mark. The gilding extends over the entire spoon — stem, bowl, and back — and is permanently bonded to the silver.
Clean the spoon exclusively by hand with warm water and mild dish soap. Then dry it with a soft cotton cloth. Never use silver dips or aggressive cleaning agents — these can damage the niello filling and permanently impair the dark contrasts. The gilding requires no special care, but should not be treated with abrasive cleaners. Not dishwasher safe. The supplied gift box is suitable for storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this spoon a children's spoon or a dessert spoon?
A dessert spoon. With a length of 16.8 cm and a weight of approx. 46 g, it is significantly larger than the children's spoons of the Niello series (13 cm, approx. 23 g). It is suitable for children of school age and for adults.
What does the squirrel symbolize as a gift?
The squirrel symbolizes diligence, foresight, and joy of life. It stands for wise precaution without losing the joy of the moment — a message particularly suitable for birth, baptism, or the start of school.
Why is the entire spoon gilded?
The full gilding is a special feature of this dessert spoon. While the children's spoons of the Niello series only gild the bowl motif, here the gold extends over the entire stem and bowl. Only the niello ornaments at the end of the handle retain their typical silver-black combination.
Can the spoon be engraved?
No. Both sides feature niello ornaments, and the bowl has the squirrel motif. An engraving would destroy the overall artistic impression. As a personal alternative, we offer the free SilberVerse Card.
Is niello safe for contact with food?
Yes. Niello is a dark metal alloy that is melted into engraved ornaments. After cooling, the filling is firmly bonded to the silver and chemically stable. The technique has been used since antiquity and is completely harmless with proper use. The spoon is made of food-safe 925 Sterling Silver.
