Material and craftsmanship

Saint George the Victorious is the patron saint of Moscow: a rider in armor on a white horse, his lance pointing downward, piercing the dragon beneath its hooves. This motif has appeared on the Moscow coat of arms since the 14th century and on the Russian state coat of arms since 1497. On this stemmed glass, it is rendered as a medallion in hand-engraved niello — every line drawn into the silver by hand, the niello fused by hand. A dense floral ornament winds around it, covering the entire bowl. On the base, the Cyrillic inscription "МОСКВА," framed by palmette ornaments, reinforces the connection to the city. Inside, warm fine gold glows, while the rim and foot ring carry additional golden accents. The stemmed glass is created at the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, where the art of niello silversmithing has been cultivated for generations, from the initial drawing to the hand-engraving, niello fusing, and final polish.
