Material and Workmanship

Both pieces are made of 925 sterling silver and feature the same niello rose blossom with leaves and tendrils – on the oval handle end of the letter opener, and as a border around the magnifying glass frame. The dark lines are not a coating or a print: The niello compound is melted into hand-engraved depressions and forms a chemical-physical bond with the silver. This bond is permanent – it does not detach, it does not peel, it only changes through polishing, and in doing so, it becomes more beautiful: The contrasts between the dark niello line and the polished silver deepen with each care. The blade of the letter opener is narrow, long, and polished, the glass lens of the magnifying glass magnifies legibly. Both pieces bear the 925 silver stamp as well as a manufacturer's mark. In the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, this niello technique has been cultivated for generations – one of Europe's oldest silversmithing techniques, where each master has only one chance per line: If it is not perfect, the work starts from scratch.
