Material and Workmanship

The filigree openwork is the heart of this service. Unlike solid silver-sheathed sets, the silver body here does not cover the porcelain entirely, but allows lilies and acanthus tendrils to stand out as sculptural ornaments against the white porcelain. The porcelain shines through the filigree, the silver appears airy, and each cup looks like a small sculpture on its own base. The silver body is cast from 925 sterling silver, crafted as fine filigree openwork, and highly polished on the raised surfaces. The porcelain comes from the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in St. Petersburg, founded in 1744 under Empress Elizabeth Petrovna — still one of the few manufacturers worldwide that fires hard porcelain according to classic recipes. Regarding the finish: The recessed reliefs are antique patinated; a thin, superficial blackening sits in the fine tendrils and acanthus lines of the filigree and emphasizes the sculptural play of the lily motif. This patination is not a niello inlay — niello is a different Russian technique with melted-in black sulfur-silver paste, typical of the SevChern manufactory from Veliky Ustyug. In this service, the patination is superficial and also acts as a protective layer against further tarnishing of the surrounding silver.

Usage and Occasions

In European iconography, the lily has stood for purity, dignity, and noble claim since the Middle Ages. On this service, the motif consistently runs across all 17 pieces: as a sculptural high relief on the cup bodies, as a crowning element at the stem ends of spoons, lemon fork, and sugar scoop, and as a recurring element in the base of the teapot and sugar bowl. The six cups, each holding 155 milliliters, are designed for an intense, concentrated parlor gathering — for a long afternoon where tea or mocha is sipped slowly. The Symphonie service is particularly suitable as a gift for silver or golden weddings, for a milestone birthday with a large family, as a family heirloom passed from mother to daughter, or as a welcome gift for a household with a salon tradition, where the Sunday gathering regularly fills six or more seats.

Engraving and SilverVerse Card

If you would like to personalize the service — with a date, initials, dedication, family name, or family crest — please contact us before placing your order. We will clarify with the manufacturer which surfaces are suitable for the desired engraving and agree on the font, depth, and position with you. For engraving, we include a complimentary SilverVerse card in photo format, 15 × 10 cm landscape, individually designed for the occasion and recipient.

Care

Hand wash with lukewarm water and mild dish soap, no dishwasher, no silver dip — both would alter the antique patination in the fine filigree recesses. The porcelain inside is resistant to coffee and tea but should be stored dry after use. The polished silver high surfaces and the openwork lily ornaments can be refreshed at any time with a soft silver polishing cloth; for filigree cleaning, a soft brush helps remove dust from the fine lines. Storage in the included case protects against air contact and slows down the natural tarnishing of the silver.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the set?
Seventeen pieces for six people: an 800 ml teapot, a 390 ml sugar bowl, a 270 ml creamer, six cups with porcelain interiors and silver filigree covers, each 155 ml, six teaspoons with lily-stem ends, one lemon fork, and one sugar scoop — all in a velvet-lined navy blue case.

Are 155 ml cups not too small for tea?
155 ml is the classic mocha and espresso size, made for intense, concentrated enjoyment in a parlor setting. It is also suitable for strong black tea or small tea infusions but is smaller than a modern tea cup.

Is this niello?
No. The blackening in the filigree recesses is a superficial antique patination by the ArgentA manufactory, not a melted-in niello inlay. Niello is a different Russian technique with black sulfur-silver paste, typical of the SevChern manufactory from Veliky Ustyug.
