Description

Peter the Great on horseback, atop a granite block, the horse rearing on its hind legs: the Bronze Horseman on Senate Square in St. Petersburg is one of Russia’s best-known monuments, immortalized in literature by Alexander Pushkin’s narrative poem of 1833. The “Bronze Horseman, Antique Patina” tea glass holder set features a three-dimensional depiction of the equestrian statue in the central coat-of-arms medallion of a podstakannik made of 925 sterling silver. It also includes a classic teaspoon and a diamond-cut crystal glass, presented together in a premium velvet-lined case.

At a glance

  • Set includes: podstakannik + diamond-cut crystal glass + classic teaspoon – 3 pieces
  • Material: 925 sterling silver, with darkened recesses in the coat of arms
  • Total silver weight: approx. 151 g (holder approx. 129 g, spoon approx. 22 g)
  • Holder dimensions: height approx. 95 mm, diameter approx. 72 mm
  • “Tschajny” crystal glass: approx. 200 ml, approx. 65 × 100 mm, diamond-cut pattern
  • Case dimensions: approx. 132 × 132 × 165 mm, velvet-lined, navy blue

Materials and craftsmanship

The holder features the same neoclassical column structure as the other coat-of-arms sets in our collection: a handle with a beaded edge, acanthus scrolls, and a laurel wreath with a bow in the central medallion. The equestrian statue of Peter the Great is rendered there in relief—the rider on a rearing horse, with the rocky base suggested beneath its hooves. The recessed areas of the relief are given an antique patina, while the raised surfaces remain polished, lending the composition greater depth and dimension. The included teaspoon is deliberately understated: an elegant sterling silver handle with an oval terminal and subtle acanthus details at the neck, and a mirror-polished bowl—quieter in design than the “Imperator” or “Edinstvo” spoons in other sets, keeping the coat of arms on the holder as the focal point. The “Tschajny” diamond-cut crystal glass, with its geometric cut pattern, is a replaceable consumable and can be reordered as needed. The darkening is a surface patina and differs from niello, the sulfur-silver inlay technique used by the SevChern workshop. A gold-plated version of the medallion is available on request; we also offer the holder on its own with a tea glass, but without a spoon or case.

Uses and occasions

The monument was completed in 1782 after twelve years of work by the French sculptor Étienne Falconet, commissioned by Catherine the Great, and still stands on Senate Square in St. Petersburg. For St. Petersburg residents and readers of Pushkin, it is far more than a tourist attraction—it is part of the city’s identity. The set makes a fitting gift for St. Petersburg enthusiasts, former residents and travelers, collectors of Russian history and literature, fathers with an interest in history and architecture, as well as Slavists, Russian teachers and historians. It is also well suited as a diplomatic or embassy gift, with symbolism that reads as cultural rather than political, or as a gift for equestrians and horse lovers, or as an heirloom. Engraving and SilberVerse card

The coat-of-arms medallion on the holder features the equestrian statue and is not available for custom engraving; the base of the glass holder and the teaspoon handle can be engraved. For a set designed with engraving in mind and a blank coat-of-arms field, we recommend our “Der Meister” set instead. On request, we’ll include a SilberVerse card measuring 15 × 10 cm, digitally designed with a personal message, free of charge.

Care

Clean the holder and spoon by hand only, using warm water, mild dish soap and a soft cloth—never put them in the dishwasher, and never rub away the darkening in the recesses with silver polish. Wipe dry after use and store in the case, which protects against exposure to air and slows natural tarnishing. If the polished surfaces tarnish more heavily, use a soft silver-polishing cloth without abrasive grit on the raised areas only, never on the darkened recesses. The diamond-cut glass is dishwasher-safe on a short, gentle cycle, though handwashing is gentler and keeps it clearer.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly does the holder depict?
The equestrian statue of Peter the Great by Étienne Falconet, erected in 1782 on Senate Square in St. Petersburg. Peter on horseback, atop a rearing animal, rendered in three-dimensional high relief in silver, with darkened recesses.

Why is it called the “Bronze Horseman” if the original is made of bronze?
In Russian, the name literally means “Copper Horseman,” because in the 19th century bronze was often colloquially called copper. Pushkin used the common expression of his day; in German, both “Bronzener Reiter” and “Eherner Reiter” have become established names.

Is the darkening the same as niello?
No. Niello is a sulfur-silver inlay technique associated with SevChern of Veliky Ustyug. The darkening used here is a surface patina applied to the recessed areas.
