Material and workmanship
The holder belongs to the ArgentA coat of arms family with a classicist column structure, acanthus volutes, and a bail handle with a beaded edge. Within the oval medallion, framed by a laurel wreath and bow, a small city vignette of Red Square is sculpturally incorporated: the tower with its clock and five-pointed star, with the silhouettes of the Kremlin wall and St. Basil's Cathedral in front and to the side. The depressions of the relief are antiqued and patinated, while the raised surfaces remain polished, creating a three-dimensional architectural effect. The accompanying classic table teaspoon features an elegant stem with an oval end and subtle acanthus decorations at the neck, with a highly polished bowl – a simpler design, fitting the monumental character of the Kremlin motif. The "Chayny" checkered crystal glass with a cut geometric pattern is a replaceable consumable item and can be replaced if needed. The blackening is a superficial patination and differs from Niello, the sulfur-silver inlay technique of the SevChern manufactory. A gilded version of the medallion is available upon request.
Use and occasions
The Spasskaya Tower was built in 1491 by the Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari and has housed the Kremlin chimes with carillon since the 17th century. Since 1996, Russian state television has broadcast the twelve chimes of the Spasskaya bell precisely at midnight on December 31st – a fixed component of the Russian New Year ritual, which also lives on in many Russian-German households. The set is suitable as a gift for Moscow lovers and travelers, as a New Year's gift, for Russian-German families, for Slavists, Russian teachers, historians, and architecture enthusiasts, as well as a Father's Day gift for men with a connection to Russian history. It also makes a good diplomatic and embassy gift or as an addition to a collection of heraldic silver art – and, unlike purely equestrian motifs, is gender-neutral. Engraving and SilberVerse Card
The coat of arms medallion on the holder features the Kremlin vignette and is not available for personal engraving. For an engraving-focused set with a blank coat of arms field, we recommend our "The Master" set as an alternative. Upon request, we include a SilberVerse card measuring 15 × 10 cm with every engraving – digitally designed, with a personal dedication, currently at no extra charge.
Care
Clean the holder and spoon only by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth – never in the dishwasher, never rub away the blackening in the depressions with silver polish. Wipe dry after use and store in the case to protect it from air contact and delay natural tarnishing. For heavier tarnishing of the polished surfaces, a soft silver polishing cloth without abrasive particles can be used on the raised areas, never on the blackened depressions. The checkered glass is dishwasher safe on a short gentle cycle, but hand washing keeps it gentler and clearer.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly does the holder show?
The Spasskaya Tower in the Moscow Kremlin with a clock and a five-pointed red star, with a vignette of the Kremlin wall and St. Basil's Cathedral behind it. Sculptural silver high relief with blackening in the depressions, set in an oval medallion with a laurel wreath and bow.
Are these the New Year's bells?
Yes – the main bell of the Spasskaya Tower has been the official midnight signal in Russian TV broadcasts on New Year's Eve since 1996. It strikes twelve times precisely at midnight.
Is the blackening the same as Niello?
No. Niello is a sulfur-silver inlay technique, typical of SevChern from Veliky Ustyug. The blackening used here is a superficial patination in the depressions.
