Imagine it like ink in silver — or like a tattoo on the skin: the dark mass is not on top, but is melted into the hand-engraved lines and permanently bonded with the metal.

For the horse, niello is primarily used in the mane — each strand is traced with its own niello line, which gives the mane movement and flow. Additionally, there are fine shadings at the base of the neck and in the head profile. The calm silver of the forehead and nostrils contrasts with the dark lines of movement. The 3D effect arises precisely from this contrast.

Hand Engraving and Master's Signature

In niello hand engraving, every stroke has only one chance. If a line is not perfect, the master starts over — no software undo button, no readjustment possible. A flowing mane, in particular, demands the highest precision: every strand must be in the direction of flow, otherwise the horse appears frozen instead of in motion.
