Material and Workmanship
The icon is crafted as a riza work: The painted image of Saint Nicholas in episcopal vestments, holding crosses and the Gospel book, is framed by a fully gilded silver frame. The ornamentation of the frame edges and corner fittings is executed in gold, while the niello hand-engraving creates dark contrasts in the fine lines, adding depth to the frame. Mounted on the wooden frame, the icon weighs approx. 265 grams, with dimensions of 161 x 131 x 25 mm.
Use and Occasions
Nicholas of Myra is considered one of the most revered saints in both Orthodox and Western traditions and is frequently invoked as the patron saint of travelers, children, and seafarers. An icon of Saint Nicholas is a classic gift for Easter, Christmas, baptism, or name day — especially for those named Nicholas themselves or who feel a connection to the saint. The piece is also suitable as a collector's item of Russian niello silver art.
Care
- Dry, soft cloth for polished and gilded surfaces — no silver polishing agents
- No silver dip — niello inlays and gilding would be damaged
- Store in a gift box or on the wall, not in direct sunlight
Frequently Asked Questions
What distinguishes this icon from a painted or printed icon?
The silver frame with full gilding and niello hand-engraving is a self-contained metal artwork that provides a permanent setting for the painted image — a technique known as riza or oklad in Russian icon tradition.
Is this icon suitable for daily use in a prayer corner?
Yes. The icon is mounted on a sturdy wooden frame and can be hung on the wall or stood up — for a permanent presence in the living space or at the home altar.
Is this icon also available in a heavier version?
Yes, a variant weighing approx. 420 grams and with partial instead of full gilding is also available.
