On the back of the fork head sits the classic Pisces symbol, hand-engraved within a small escutcheon – two arcs for the period from February 20th to March 19th in the Western zodiac calendar. Gold-plated tines, a florally adorned niello panel at the end of the handle – approx. 37.6 g of genuine silver, approx. 161 × 23 mm.

Made by SevChern (ZAO Severnaya Chern), Veliky Ustyug

SevChern and Niello Hand Engraving

SevChern (ZAO Severnaya Chern) produces in Veliky Ustyug on the Northern Dvina. The art of niello in Veliky Ustyug has been documented since 1683 – SevChern continues this Veliky Ustyugian tradition.

Niello in two sentences: A dark metal alloy is melted into engraved lines and becomes an integral part of the silver. Without niello, it would be an engraving – with niello, it becomes a relief. On this fork, the niello panel is located at the end of the handle: floral ornaments, black on silver. More about the niello production process in the blog.

The silver bears the 925 hallmark on the handle – 92.5% pure silver, no silver plating. The gilding completely covers the tines and handle.

The Motif — Classic Pisces Symbol and Gold-on-Silver Contrast

On the back of the fork head, in a small escutcheon directly below the tines: the classic Pisces symbol. Two arcs pointing in opposite directions, connected by a horizontal line – the twelfth sign of the Western zodiac calendar. The symbol is hand-engraved; engraving lines and border lines of the escutcheon are gilded, the background remains matte silver.

This creates the gold-on-silver contrast: gilded lines on a matte silver field. This area on the back is the un-gilded part of the piece, apart from the niello panel.

Spoons and teaspoons feature two ornamental fish on the back of their bowls – figurative, swimming in opposite directions. The fork displays the classic Pisces symbol in the escutcheon. Two artistic representations of the same sign.

Matching Pisces Cutlery Items Made of 925 Silver

Three pieces with the zodiac sign Pisces complement each other on the table:

The dessert fork (approx. 161 × 23 mm, approx. 37.6 g) is the functional extension: it pierces, lifts, and grasps – what spoons and teaspoons don't do.

The Dessert Spoon Zodiac Pisces is the main serving piece (approx. 168 × 39 mm, approx. 46 g). It features two ornamental fish on the back of its bowl – the figurative variant of the sign.

The Teaspoon Zodiac Pisces is the smallest piece (approx. 136 × 31 mm, approx. 25 g) – same function as the dessert spoon, more compact format. For coffee, tea, and small portions.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Dessert Fork Zodiac Pisces

Where is the zodiac engraving on the dessert fork?
On the back of the fork head, in a small escutcheon directly below the tines. The classic Pisces symbol – two arcs with a connecting line – is hand-engraved there, with gilded lines on matte silver as a contrasting background.

Why does the fork feature a different Pisces motif than the spoon and teaspoon?
The fork bears the classic, minimalist zodiac symbol – two arcs with a horizontal line in the escutcheon. Spoons and teaspoons show the figurative variant: two ornamental fish, swimming in opposite directions. Two artistic representations of the same sign; the bowl surface offered more space for figurative stylization.

Which areas of the dessert fork are gilded?
The tines and handle are fully gilded. On the back of the fork head, a matte silver field remains as a contrast surface for the Pisces symbol – only the symbol and the border lines are gilded there.

How do you care for niello and gilding on the fork?
Store dry. Use silver polish only on bare silver and gold surfaces, not on the niello panel. After use, rinse by hand and wipe dry. Properly cared for, the dark niello contrast remains visible.

Is there also a Pisces gift for newborns?
Yes, for the baby context, there is the Baby Spoon Zodiac Pisces. This dessert fork is silverware for adults.

The dessert spoon with the figurative Pisces motif is the serving counterpart to the fork.
