Material and workmanship

The dark niello inlays give the contours their depth; niello is not a color or a lacquer, but a black metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into engraved depressions at over 800 degrees Celsius and insolubly bonded with the silver. The cup is manufactured by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug – where the niello tradition has been documented since 1683.
