Description
Some families prefer a quieter, more understated aesthetic for a sacred baptismal gift than that offered by bright colors or gilding. This baptismal spoon in 925 sterling silver features the image of Saint Matrona of Moscow in blackened silver work — simple, solemn, and with the depth characteristic of this technique. A keepsake for baptism that remains in the family.
At a glance
- Material: 925 sterling silver, partially blackened

Material and craftsmanship
The saint's relief is blackened through a targeted oxidation process that emphasizes the fine recesses of the motif, while the surrounding silver remains polished. Unlike a varnish, this blackening is firmly anchored in the silver and does not wear off. The handle features Orthodox ornamental patterns; the bowl is smoothly polished. The spoon is crafted by Argenta from genuine 925 sterling silver. Weighing approximately 27 g, it has a pleasant feel in the hand.
Use and occasions
This spoon is primarily presented for Orthodox baptisms, often by godparents or grandparents, and is equally suitable for births or Orthodox holidays. Saint Matrona of Moscow (1881–1952) is considered one of Russia's most venerated saints and a patron saint for children, the sick, and people in difficult life situations. For families who appreciate Orthodox tradition in a more understated, less opulent form, the blackened version is a fitting choice alongside the enameled and gilded designs.
Engraving and SilberVerse card
An engraving with a name, baptism date, or a short dedication is possible upon review — please contact our engraving service for this. Upon request, we can also include a personal SilberVerse card in photo format (15×10 cm landscape) — individually designed to suit the occasion and free of charge, available with or without an engraving order.
Care
Clean the spoon only by hand with lukewarm water and mild dish soap, dry it immediately afterwards, and occasionally polish it with a silver polishing cloth. Do not use a dishwasher — the heat and cleaning agents are too aggressive for the blackened surface. The blackening itself remains permanent. Store the spoon in a dry place in the included gift box.
Frequently asked questions
Who was Saint Matrona of Moscow?
She was born blind but developed extraordinary spiritual abilities as a child and was canonized in 1999. Today, she is considered the patron saint of the sick, children, and pregnant women.
Why blackened instead of gilded or enameled?
The blackening has a more understated, antique character compared to festive gilding or the colored enamel versions. We carry all three versions side-by-side in our range.
Can the spoon be engraved?
Yes, upon review. Short names, the baptism date, or a small dedication on the handle are possible.
