Antique oxidation — and what it is not

The indentations between the reliefs are darkened. This makes the stars and the angel stand out in relief, as light and shadow are no longer absorbed by the polished silver. This is achieved through a surface oxidation with which the manufacturer intentionally ages the piece in advance.

There are two things you should know about this. Firstly, this is not niello. Niello is a black metal paste that is melted into recessed lines and permanently bonded to the silver—a completely different technique native to Veliky Ustyug. The oxidation here lies on the surface. Secondly, the oxidation is not a varnish or a paint, meaning it cannot peel off, and it also acts as a protective layer against further tarnishing—the piece will look the same in five years as it does today. The Orthodox cross

The pendant is small yet fully detailed: the ends of the crossbar terminate in a cloverleaf shape, with the corpus in relief in the center. In Christian iconography, the trefoil ends represent the Trinity; this shape is widely used for Orthodox baptismal crosses. The surface remains polished—without enamel or gold plating.

Care: to preserve the detail

After use, warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth are sufficient. No dishwasher, no scouring agents, and above all no silver dip —such a bath would dissolve the dark recesses and take away exactly what makes the piece special.
