Description

A lot is said on the day of a christening, and little of it is remembered. What remains is what you can hold in your hand. This set puts two things in the godparent's hand: a silver spoon, with a guardian angel folding its hands on the handle, and a small Orthodox cross. Both are presented in a hinged case, with a satin ribbon on the spoon handle. Nothing more needs to be said — simply opening it is enough.

For the little one

Christening Gifts for Boys in 925 Silver

From a single spoon to a multi-piece set — silver that lasts beyond the day and remains in the cupboard years later.

The Christening Set for Boys: Spoon and Cross

Two pieces that endure in different ways. The spoon is made for everyday use — short handle, smooth bowl, child-sized. The cross is not for a baby's daily wear; it waits until the child is old enough to wear it. That's why no chain is included: the length and timing are decided by the parents.

The same combination is available as a Christening Set in pink enamel for girls — identical in craftsmanship, only the color of the enamel band differs. Other combinations can be found under Gift Sets for Christenings.

The Guardian Angel in Light Blue Enamel

On the handle top sits a plump angel with closed eyes and folded hands, surmounted by a gilded halo. Above it is a gilded cross, entwined with a curved band in light blue enamel. At the transition to the handle sits a gilded sun with a spiral.

The figure is deliberately childlike — not a stern messenger, but a counterpart that a child will later recognize again. Those who appreciate the imagery will also find it on the baby spoon with an angel in gold-blue or in the selection of baby spoons made of 925 silver.

The Orthodox Cross with Cloverleaf Ends

The pendant measures around two centimeters and is still fully detailed: the ends of the beams run into a clover shape, with the corpus in relief in the center. The surface remains polished — without enamel, without gilding. This is intentional, so that the cross does not compete with the colored spoon.

The three-leaf ends represent the Trinity in Christian iconography; this form is widespread in Orthodox baptismal crosses. Related pieces can be found under Christian gifts made of 925 silver.

Consecrated in Kolchugino

The pieces in this series are consecrated before delivery — by the local Orthodox community of the Svyato-Pokrovsky Church in Kolchugino, Vladimir Region, Alexandrov Eparchy of the Moscow Patriarchate. A small certificate to this effect is included in the case.

For Orthodox families, this is often the point where a christening gift differs from a pretty spoon. More pieces with this background can be found under Orthodox gifts made of 925 silver.

Hand-polished instead of rhodium-plated — what that means

Many silver items receive a wafer-thin rhodium layer at the end, which slows down tarnishing and gives the surface a cool white appearance. The spoon and cross in this set are not rhodium-plated: they are hand-polished to a mirror finish with cotton wheels, nothing else.

This has two consequences you should be aware of. First, the silver shows its own, somewhat warmer tone instead of the hard white of a coating. Second, it will tarnish over the years — this is not a weakness, but the normal behavior of uncoated sterling silver, and it can be polished away at any time. On a child's spoon, there is nothing but 925 silver, colored enamel, and the gilded parts.

Who gives this set as a gift

Mostly the godparent. Their gift can be more visible than that of other guests, and two pieces in a case achieve this without being ostentatious. Grandparents also like to choose it — often with the idea of something that will be passed down later. For parents, it is the quieter choice: not a toy, not a consumable, but an object that keeps the christening in the home.

If you're still wavering between several ideas, the guide What does a godparent give for a christening? can help. The entire motif series can be found under Royal Childhood.

Care: to keep the silver bright

After use, warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth for drying are sufficient. No dishwasher, no abrasive cleaners, no silver dips — the gilded surfaces and enamel do not tolerate aggressive agents. If the silver tarnishes over time, a silver polishing cloth will restore its shine. It is best stored in the supplied case or in a dry place with no drafts; this is detailed in our care instructions for silver.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Christening Set

What age is the spoon suitable for?
As cutlery from the complementary feeding age, when the child starts to use a spoon. It is usually given much earlier — for a christening, often already at birth.

Why is the silver not rhodium-plated?
Because the manufactory polishes the pieces by hand instead of coating them. The silver remains pure, shows its own tone, and will therefore tarnish over time. A polishing cloth restores the shine at any time.

How can the set be personalized?
Via a SilberVerse card: a printed card with a verse or dedication that accompanies the gift. How this works is explained under About SilberVerse. Contact us before ordering, and we will coordinate the text.

Is silver safe for a baby?
925 Sterling silver has been common for cutlery for centuries and is nickel-free. Like any children's cutlery, the spoon should be used under supervision; due to its size, the pendant is not for infants and will be worn later.

Does it come with a chain?
No. The set contains a spoon and a pendant. The parents will choose the appropriate chain themselves later, matched to age and neck circumference.

Is the set also available for a girl?
Yes, in the same design with pink instead of light blue enamel — see Christening Gifts for Girls.
