Material and craftsmanship

A wreath of open, golden filigree arches encircles the waist of the crystal glass, beneath which runs a narrow niello ornament band that marks the transition to the polished silver foot. Niello is a black inlay that is melted into engraved lines, ground flush, and polished – like ink in silver, no lacquer, no paint. The pattern was hand-engraved, filled with niello, and polished back; the result is permanent and does not wear off. The golden filigree arches above let the faceted crystal glass shine through, with every movement of light refracting across the cut surfaces. The gold-plated, smoothly curved handle makes the glass easy to hold securely, even with hot tea.

SevChern crafts niello silver in Veliky Ustyug, Vologda Oblast in Northern Russia, where this art has been documented since 1683. In 1937, this tradition received a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. This tea glass holder goes through six production stages: shaping the silver blank, hand-engraving the ornament, niello melting, grinding and exposing the pattern, gilding the arches and handle, and final polishing. The piece is hallmarked.

Care

The glass and silver holder can be separated; the glass can be removed and cleaned separately. Wash the silver holder exclusively by hand: lukewarm water, mild detergent, soft cloth. No dishwasher, no silver dip, no ultrasonic cleaner; these methods damage the gold plating and niello inlay. For the polished silver surfaces on the foot, a soft silver polishing cloth is sufficient. Store in a dry place, ideally in the gift box.

Is the piece suitable for hot drinks?
Yes, the crystal glass is designed for hot drinks. The gold-plated handle remains comfortable to hold, even with hot tea. Do not put in the dishwasher.

What distinguishes 925 silver from silver-plated tableware?
Silver-plated tableware has a thin layer of silver over another base metal that wears off over time. 925 sterling silver is solid; the entire wall thickness of the holder consists of the silver alloy.
