Why Size and Gilding Work Together

With small pieces, partial gilding is a detail that you discover up close. With a 33 cm goblet, it becomes a long-distance image.

The reason lies in the distance from which one views the piece. At a long table, people sit five or six meters away from the goblet. From this distance, chased silver blurs into a uniformly bright surface – the relief is no longer legible.

The gilded leaf tips, however, remain recognizable. Gold reflects warmer and darker than polished silver; the color difference carries further than the height difference. Thus, the piece retains its structure even from a distance.

The Gold Follows the Relief

Only what plastically protrudes on this goblet is gilded: the freestanding leaf tips on the rim of the cup, the leaves on the knop, the extensions on the base. The flat ornament in between remains silver.

This is done in two stages: First, the goblet is completely finished, then all surfaces that are to remain silver are covered, and only the exposed parts are gilded. With protruding parts that have undersides and undercuts, covering is the real work.

The Fifth Cup

On Seder night, four cups of wine are on the table, from which one drinks – for the four promises of liberation. A fifth is filled but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu. It belongs to the prophet, whose coming heralds future redemption; towards the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him.

The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated goods is twofold in a goblet: Chasing only succeeds in solid silver – a plating would tear during hammering – and the internal gilding protects precisely where it cannot be polished. A goblet that is filled for decades needs both. The cup is hallmarked.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased – hammered into the silver by hand with punches.

The Largest Partially Gilded Version

Of the gilded goblets in the line, this is the largest. Its form corresponds to the plain Jumbo; in addition, there is the ornament accented with fine gold, which has a much greater effect on a surface of this height than on smaller pieces.

A note for collectors: Silver and fine gold age differently. The silver zones darken, while the gilded ones remain as they are. Such a piece will look different after twenty years than it does today – more contrasted, not worse. Those who do not want this polish regularly; those who appreciate it let it happen.
