What Five Kilograms of Silver Mean

The weight determines the construction. A 50 cm goblet with a thin-walled bowl would be top-heavy; therefore, the mass is in the base, which measures approximately 22 × 22 cm and is solid.

The alloy here is also not a formality: 925 sterling silver contains 75 parts copper per 1,000, which gives the metal the necessary hardness. Pure silver would be too soft for this span – the form would warp over the years.

When carrying the goblet, hold it with both hands at the base and the knop, never by the bowl. Carry the plate flat, not by a corner.

The Fifth Cup

The Work

The ornaments are chased: hammered into the silver by hand with punches, stroke by stroke. Across both pieces, this means many thousands of strokes, spread over weeks.

At the upper rim of the bowl, the acanthus leaves detach from the wall and stand freely. These parts cannot be hammered; they are worked out of stronger material until they separate. It is the most elaborate technique in the line – and the reason why this ensemble stands in a class of its own.

The goblet interior is gilded because it stands full of wine for hours, and silver reacts to acid.

By hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly – the goblet also inside, with a long soft cloth, the plate lying flat. No dishwasher. Work carefully on the freestanding leaf tips; carry the goblet with both hands at the base and knop. Tarnishing is reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth between the leaves may remain.
