Description
The largest ensemble that Zaramella produces in this line. A piece of this size is rarely purchased for one’s own dining table — it goes to congregations, is donated for an anniversary, inscribed with a dedication, and then stands in the same place for decades.
At a glance
- Eliyahu set in 925 sterling silver: goblet and square plate
- Goblet approx. 50 cm, plate approx. 37.5 × 37.5 cm, goblet base approx. 22 × 22 cm
- Combined silver weight approx. 5.1 kg
- Goblet with free-standing leaf tips, chased knop, widely flared base
- Interior of goblet gold-plated
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948
Half a meter on the table
Placed together, the goblet and plate create a structure half a meter high on a base of almost forty centimeters. This is no longer just a place setting — it is an object around which the table is set.
Historically, such ensembles were not made for private households. They belong in community halls, in foundations, at tables where thirty or more people sit. They are both an instrument and a monument: used once a year, and kept on display the rest of the time.
Those looking for their own home are better served by the sets around 28 cm. This ensemble is made for the occasion where an object is intended to point beyond its immediate purpose.
What five kilograms of silver mean
The weight determines the construction. A 50 cm goblet with a thin-walled bowl would be top-heavy; therefore, the mass is located in the base, which measures approx. 22 × 22 cm and is solidly crafted.
The alloy here is also no mere formality: 925 sterling silver is 92.5% fine silver and harder than fine silver – hard enough for this span. 999 fine silver would be too soft at this span — the shape would warp over the years.
When carrying the goblet, hold it with both hands by the base and the knop, never by the bowl. Carry the plate flat, not by a corner.
The fifth goblet
At the Seder, four goblets of wine are placed on the table, from which one drinks. They represent the four promises from the Exodus narrative: I will bring you out. I will rescue you. I will redeem you. I will take you to be my people.
A fifth is filled but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu. It belongs to the prophet, whose coming announces the future redemption. Toward the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him.
The fifth expression — I will bring you — is still to come. An ensemble of this size makes what is outstanding visible: It is the most conspicuous object in the room, and it remains untouched.
The work
The ornaments are chased: hammered by hand into the silver with punches, blow by blow. Across both pieces, this means many thousands of strikes, spread over weeks.
At the upper edge of the bowl, the acanthus leaves detach from the wall and stand free. These sections cannot be embossed; they are worked out of thicker material until they separate. It is the most elaborate technique in the line — and the reason why this ensemble is in a class of its own.
The interior of the goblet is gold-plated, as has been customary for silver drinking vessels for centuries.
As a gift
As a donation to a congregation, as a token of honor, for a major anniversary. Ensembles of this magnitude are almost never carried by one person alone — they come from a family together, a circle of friends, an institution.
They are also what is passed on when a name is meant to endure: what is engraved here will still be there in fifty years.
Engraving
The goblet base with an edge length of approx. 22 cm and the center of the plate offer the largest engraving surfaces in the line — enough for several lines with names, occasion, and date, easily legible even from a distance. For pieces going to congregations, the occasion of the donation is recorded there. We discuss the layout and line spacing in detail beforehand. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Care
By hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly — the goblet on the inside as well, using a long soft cloth, the plate lying flat. No dishwasher. Work carefully around the free-standing leaf tips; carry the goblet with both hands by the base and knop. Tarnish is reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth between the leaves may remain. Frequently asked questions
Does the ensemble fit on a normal dining table?
It fits, but appears oversized there and takes up a lot of space. For the home, we recommend the sets around 28 cm. This ensemble is intended for long tables, congregations, and formal displays.
How is it stored?
It requires a deep shelf or a display case. Before purchasing, it is worth checking the intended location.
Are both parts included?
Yes — the goblet at approx. 51 cm and the plate at approx. 37.5 × 37.5 cm. Both pieces are also available individually.
Is the ensemble kosher?
We carry silver items and describe their use — we cannot provide religious legal advice. Questions regarding ritual suitability should be answered by your congregation.
Is it delivered in a gift box?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
The two pieces of the ensemble
The goblet at approx. 51 cm and the plate at approx. 37.5 × 37.5 cm. Both are available individually; together they form the largest ensemble that Zaramella produces in this line.
A piece of this size is rarely purchased for one’s own dining table. It goes to congregations, foundations, collections — to places where an object stands in the same spot for decades and carries a history with it. Consistently, the manufacturer does not list the goblet in the catalog as a Cup, but as a Religious Chiselled Cup.
Those looking for the same design language on a domestic scale will find it in the Jumbo set — eighteen centimeters smaller, much more manageable for everyday use.
