Those outfitting for the Seder for the first time begin with this combination. The goblet and plate were designed together and are manufactured together — same silver tone, same hand in the chasing. Both are also available individually; if you already own the goblet, you can add the plate later.

What Makes a Set

You can buy the goblet and plate individually — and many do, as the pieces are acquired for different occasions. The result is often a juxtaposition that doesn't quite match.

Three things must be right for two silver pieces to appear as a unit. The dimensions: The plate diameter is ideally just under the goblet height, here 25 to 28 cm. The ornament density: A densely chased goblet on a restrained plate looks like you picked the wrong one. And the surface: Two pieces from different manufacturers rarely have the same polish.

With a set, all three points are resolved from the outset. This is the real value — not the price advantage, but the certainty.

The Fifth Cup

On Seder night, four cups of wine are on the table, from which people drink. They represent the four promises from the Exodus narrative: I will bring you out. I will rescue you. I will redeem you. I will take you to be my people.

A fifth cup is filled, but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu. It belongs to the prophet, whose coming announces future redemption. Towards the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him — in many families, a child goes to open it.

The fifth expression of the narrative — I will bring you in — is yet to come. This cup stands for that.

Why a Plate is Included

The goblet is filled to the brim — fuller than one would otherwise pour a glass. What overflows is caught by the plate.

And it gives the goblet its own space on a table that is already full: Seder plate with the six symbolic foods, glasses for everyone, candles, the Haggadah at each place. Without a plate, the goblet stands amidst everything else.

Material and Origin

The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated goods is doubly evident in a goblet: chasing only succeeds in solid silver — a plating would tear during the process — and the interior gilding protects precisely where polishing is not possible. A goblet that is filled for decades needs both. The Italian hallmark of the manufactory indicates the material.

The goblet interior is gold-plated: it stands full of wine all evening, and wine is acidic. Gold does not react, and the interior of a goblet cannot be polished.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased — driven into the silver by hand with punches, stroke by stroke.

Engraving

The smooth foot rim of the goblet and the smooth outer rim of the plate remain available for engraving. In sets, usually only one part is engraved — often the plate, so that the goblet remains untouched and later generations can add to it there. We will coordinate this with you in advance. Care

By hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly — including the inside of the goblet. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver and would damage the gilding. After the Seder, rinse promptly so no wine dries. Tarnish is reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth in the chased depressions can remain. What the Set Consists Of

Both are available individually. If you already own a goblet and only need the plate, the individual item is a better choice. The advantage of the set is not in the price, but in the fact that both parts come from the same production run: same silver tone, same hand in the chasing, same depth of chasing.

The more understated alternative is the Light set, where the middle section of the cup remains smooth.

When placed together — goblet on the plate — the set creates a cohesive image. Because a Seder evening once a year is not much, it stands visibly in many households the rest of the time: on a sideboard, in a display cabinet, as the one silver ensemble in the room.
