Description

Anyone setting up for the Seder anew begins with this combination. The goblet and plate were designed together and are crafted together — same silver tone, same hand at the punch. Both are also available individually; those who already own the goblet can supplement it later.

At a glance

  • Eliyahu set in 925 sterling silver: goblet and plate
  • Goblet approx. 28 cm, plate approx. 25 cm — combined silver weight approx. 0.85 kg
  • Both pieces fully chased, same stylistic signature
  • Interior of the goblet gilded
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufactory since 1948

What makes a set

You can purchase the goblet and plate separately — and many do so because pieces are added for different occasions. The result is often a juxtaposition that does not quite match.

Three things must be in harmony for two silver pieces to appear as a unit. The dimensions: The plate diameter is ideally just under the goblet height, here 25 to 28 cm. The density of the ornamentation: A densely chased goblet on an understated plate looks as if you’ve picked the wrong piece. And the surface finish: Two pieces from different production runs rarely share the same polish.

With a set, all three points are resolved from the outset. That is the true value — not the price advantage, but the certainty.

The fifth cup

On Seder night, there are four cups of wine on the table from which to drink. They represent the four promises from the Exodus narrative: I will bring you out. I will rescue you. I will redeem you. I will take you to be my people.

A fifth is filled, but not consumed: the Kos shel Eliyahu. It belongs to the prophet, whose coming heralds the future redemption. Toward the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him — in many families, a child does this.

The fifth expression of the narrative — I will bring you — has yet to come. This is what this cup stands for.

Why a plate is part of it

The goblet is filled to the brim — fuller than one would normally pour a glass. The plate catches what overflows.

And it provides the goblet its own space on a table that is already full: Seder plate with the six symbolic foods, glasses for everyone, candles, and a Haggadah in front of every seat. Without a plate, the goblet stands among everything else.

Material and origin

The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated goods is twofold for a goblet: chasing is only successful in solid silver — a plating would tear during hammering — and the interior gilding protects exactly where one cannot polish. A goblet that is filled over decades requires both.

The interior of the goblet is gilded: It stands brimming with wine all evening, and wine is acidic. Gold does not react, and the inside of a goblet cannot be polished.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased — driven into the silver by hand with punches, stroke by stroke.

As a gift

For a wedding, when a couple hosts a Seder for the first time themselves — that is the classic occasion for a complete set. For a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. As a joint gift from multiple donors.

A set takes a decision off the recipient's hands: They do not have to search for a matching plate later.

Engraving

On the goblet, the smooth foot rim remains, and on the plate, the smooth outer rim. For sets, usually only one part is engraved — often the plate, so that the goblet remains untouched and future generations can add to it. We will coordinate this with you in advance. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.

Care

By hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly — including the inside of the goblet. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver and would damage the gilding. Rinse quickly after the Seder so that no wine dries on it. Tarnishing is reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth may remain in the chased recesses. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and silver tableware.

Frequently asked questions

Are both parts included in the delivery?

Yes — the goblet with approx. 28 cm and the plate with approx. 26 cm, crafted together and delivered in one package. We also carry both parts individually.

Can one drink from the goblet?

Technically yes — it is gilded inside. However, in the rite, the cup of Eliyahu remains unconsumed.

Is the set also available in the light version?

Yes, with a polished upper cup and broader free areas — this is the calmer variant with a larger engraving surface.

Is the set kosher?

We carry silver tableware and describe its use — we cannot provide a religious legal opinion. Questions regarding ritual suitability should be answered by your community.

Is it delivered in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufactory.

What the set consists of

Two pieces that the manufacturer carries under one model number and that are crafted together:

Both are available individually. Anyone who already owns a goblet and only needs the plate is better served with the individual item. The advantage of the set lies not in the price, but in the fact that both parts come from one production: same silver tone, same hand at the punch, same depth of chasing.

The more understated alternative is the Light-Set, in which the cup remains smooth in the center.

Set up as a pair — goblet on the plate — the set creates a cohesive look. Because one Seder evening a year is little, it remains visible in many households the rest of the time: on a sideboard, in a display cabinet, as the one silver ensemble in the room.
