The three zones

The design is not accidental but follows its purpose.

The cup stands in the middle. This surface remains smooth because a cup base would wobble on a chased surface, and wine residues could not be completely removed from indentations.

The ring around it carries the ornament. It frames the cup without competing with it — you see it when you look at the table, but it doesn't distract.

The outer rim remains smooth again. It is the zone where you touch the plate, and it is the surface for an engraving.

Why a plate?

The Cup of Elijah is filled to the brim during the Seder — fuller than one would normally pour a glass. The plate catches anything that overflows or spills when set down.

But it has a second function. On a Seder table, there are plates for the symbolic foods, glasses for everyone, candles, and the Haggadah at each place. The cup would be lost among them. Its own plate provides an island for it and makes it visible that something different stands here than the rest of the dishes.

The frosted background

Behind the tendrils, the silver is roughened with a fine punch and therefore does not shine. This matting allows the polished tendrils to stand out without needing to be particularly high in relief.

On a flat plate, this is the appropriate technique: a high relief would interfere with placing the cup and collect dust. The contrast between matte and polished creates depth without needing height.

Material and origin

A silver-plated piece could not be produced in this way — the plating would tear under the punch. And it cannot be re-polished indefinitely because the layer thins out. Solid silver tolerates both: the handcraft during creation and care over generations. The plate is hallmarked.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased: hand-beaten into the silver with punches, stroke by stroke, not pressed under a machine.

Individually or as a set

Eliyahu cups are often inherited — the plate is often missing because it was never included or was lost over the generations. A separately available plate is therefore an obvious gift for someone who already owns the cup.

Engraving

The smooth outer rim is the designated area and remains visible even when the cup is placed on it. A continuous line — a name, a date, a Hebrew dedication — can be placed here. Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver. Wipe off wine residues promptly. No polishing paste on the frosted background — it would smooth the fine roughening and destroy the contrast that defines the ornament. A soft silver cloth on the polished zones is sufficient. The calmer variant of the same diameter is the Light plate of approx. 26 cm, whose center remains smooth. The difference is especially noticeable in candlelight: the frosted background of this plate scatters light, while the smooth surface of the Light plate reflects it.

For collectors, the plate is actually the more interesting piece. Cups are bought and passed down; the corresponding plates often disappear over generations. A complete pair from a single production is therefore rarer than one might think.
