Description
Narrow chased ring, wide polished zones — the counterpart to the light goblets, whose upper cup also remains clear. By candlelight, the difference compared to the dense version becomes most apparent: the smooth surface reflects, the dense ornament diffuses.

- Diameter approx. 26 cm — silver weight approx. 0.35 kg

- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948
Why goblet and plate must match
Ritual items are rarely bought all at once. A goblet comes for the Bar Mitzvah, a plate later for the wedding, a third piece is inherited. On the table, items then stand side by side that do not belong together.
This is particularly noticeable when ornament density and polish differ: a densely chased plate under a quietly crafted goblet looks as if you chose the wrong piece — even if both pieces are beautiful in their own right.
The Light version solves this within a series. Goblet and plate leave the same zones clear and carry the same amount of ornament. Whoever owns the Light goblet will find here the plate that belongs to it.
The narrow ring
Instead of a wide chased rim, this plate features only a narrow band. The larger part of the surface remains polished.
This has a practical side that you only notice when the table is set: polished surfaces reflect. By candlelight — and the Seder night takes place in the evening — the plate catches the light of the candles and returns it to the goblet standing upon it.
Why a plate
The goblet of Elijah is filled to the brim during the Seder; the abundance stands for blessings in overflow. The plate catches what spills over.
The fifth cup belongs to the prophet Elijah, whose coming, according to tradition, announces the future redemption. It is filled but not drunk from — and therefore stands on its plate throughout the evening.
Material and origin
A silver-plated piece could not even be made this way — the plating would tear under the punch. And it cannot be repolished indefinitely because the layer becomes thinner. Solid silver tolerates both: the manual labor during creation and the care over generations.
Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased — driven into the silver by hand with punches, not stamped under a press.
As a supplement
Anyone who already owns a Light goblet will find the matching counterpart here. And anyone who has an inherited goblet whose ornament is rather restrained will be better off with this plate than with a densely crafted one.
The fifth cup
Four cups of wine stand on the table on Seder night, from which one drinks. They stand for the four promises from the story of the Exodus: I will bring you out. I will rescue you. I will redeem you. I will take you to be my people.
A fifth expression follows — I will bring you — but it is not yet fulfilled. From this open point, the cup of Elijah was created. Toward the end of the evening, the front door is opened; in many families, a child goes to do it.
Engraving
In this version, the engraving area is particularly generous: after verification, the wide polished rim can accommodate a full circle of text, easily readable and visible even when the goblet is standing. We will advise you in advance on text flow and size. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Care
By hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver. Wipe off wine residues promptly. The polished surfaces show fingerprints more clearly than chased ones; a soft cloth is sufficient. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and silver tableware.
Frequently asked questions
What does "Light" mean?
Less ornamental surface, more polished base. The version appears quieter and matches the Light goblets of the same series.
Does a densely chased goblet also fit on it?
Technically, yes. Visually, it harmonizes best with a goblet of similar ornament density.
How big is the engraving area?
The polished rim is wider in this version than in the densely crafted plates — enough for a circular dedication, engraving subject to verification.
Is it kosher?
We sell silver ritual items and describe their use — we cannot provide religious legal advice. Questions regarding ritual suitability should be answered by your congregation.
Which goblet does it belong to?
To the Light goblet approx. 30 cm. Both together are available as a Light set from one production.
Is it delivered in a gift box?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
Plate, goblet, set
This plate belongs to the Light goblet approx. 30 cm, the largest in the Light series. We offer both together as a Light set — if you want both anyway, this is the easier option.
The smaller version is the Light plate approx. 23 cm. If you are looking for continuous ornamentation instead of the quiet surface, take a look at the chased plate of the same diameter: same size, different handwriting.
A word on secondary use: A flat silver plate of 26 cm is more versatile in the household than a goblet. It carries challah, confectionery, or fruit, and on days without an occasion, it stands as a display plate on the sideboard.
