Why this is not a Chanukiah

Both pieces hold nine lights, yet they are fundamentally different.

On a Chanukiah, eight candle cups are at exactly the same height, side by side in a row, and a ninth sits elevated in the middle — the shamash, used to light the others. This arrangement is not a design choice; it follows its usage.

This candelabra, by contrast, distributes its nine candle cups around the shaft, staggered in two tiers. None is highlighted, and none is used to light the others. It is a table candelabra, not a ritual object — and as such, it is made for any occasion where plenty of light is needed on the table.

What nine flames achieve

A single candle illuminates a radius of about one meter. Nine at the same height do not result in nine times the brightness, but something else: a broad, soft light without the harsh shadows cast by a single flame.

Silver enhances this. It reflects over 95 percent of visible light — more than any other utilitarian metal. Before electrification, this was the reason why candlesticks were made of silver; today, it is the reason why candlelight on a silver candelabra appears warmer than on one made of brass.

The sizes in the series

Zaramella offers this model in three configurations at the same height:

All three measure approx. 66 cm. What changes is the width of the arm assembly and the weight — going from nine to twelve flames adds over two and a half kilograms of silver.

As an introduction to this series, the nine-flame version is the sensible choice: it already appears complete on a table for eight to ten people without dominating the table.

Where it stands

A candelabra combines in one piece what would otherwise require a pair of candlesticks. This makes it the right form for round tables and the center of a room: it provides the same view from all sides, whereas a pair of individual candlesticks presupposes a specific viewing angle.

On long banquet tables, the opposite proves effective — there, it is better to arrange several single-arm candlesticks, tall ones in the middle, shorter ones towards the ends.

At approx. 66 cm, the light is clearly above the eye level of those seated and falls from above, much like a small chandelier. The line of sight across the table remains clear.

Even without candles

A candelabra is used perhaps twenty evenings a year. The rest of the time it stands as an object — and that is exactly what the chasing is designed for. The baluster shaft with its acanthus work and the dense base carry the piece even when no candles are inserted.

On a sideboard, a console, or in a tall display cabinet, such a piece is a piece of furniture in itself. Those who purchase it should plan for the space, as it would be wasted in a cupboard.

Candles and wax

Standard taper candles. Wax residue can be removed by briefly cooling the candelabra — the wax will then lift off. No knives, no hard edges: silver is softer than steel, and every mark will remain visible.

Engraving

Upon request, the rim of the base can accommodate an inscription — for candelabras, this is usually an occasion and a year. This is the standard form for a gift for a silver wedding anniversary or a company jubilee. Care

Clean by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Do not use a dishwasher. The arms can be reached with a narrow cloth, the chasing with a soft brush.
