Material and Craftsmanship

The central ornament of the two cups and the border of the tray feature a ring motif – two interlocking rings that, in Slavic tradition, cannot be separated without breaking one. The rings are hand-engraved in silver into a line relief and filled with niello, a dark silver-sulfur alloy that is melted into the silver surface in an open flame. This melting makes the niello a permanent part of the silver – the engraving does not detach and only becomes more contrasted with each polish. The cups differ in capacity with 35 ml and 50 ml, which in Russian wedding tradition represents the two partners in the bridal couple. The plating of the set is triple: Both cups are fully gilded inside with fine gold, the bases are also gilded, and the tray shows a fine gold layer both on the rim and in the center. The set is manufactured at the SevChern factory in Veliky Ustyug.

Usage and Occasions

This set is suitable for the wedding ceremony itself as a representative bridal gift, as well as for every subsequent wedding anniversary. For the silver wedding after 25 years, the symbolism is double: silver for the silver wedding, and two cups for two people who have walked this path together. It is also suitable for the golden wedding after 50 years and the diamond wedding after 60 years – a gift that becomes more meaningful with each passing year.

Care

Wash by hand, lukewarm water, dry immediately. No dishwasher, as hot detergent attacks the gilding. No silver dip, as this would dissolve the fine gold layer. The niello surfaces remain permanently dark on their own and require no care.
