Carafe 925 silver turtledove

A silver carafe made of 925 sterling silver with a niello turtle dove motif, without gilding — light and dark, silver and black, nothing else. The teardrop-shaped pitcher by SevChern features a hinged lid with a silver knob and a curved handle, its oval medallion displaying a pair of doves amidst floral vines. With a capacity of 1,500 ml, it is made for the dining table — for water, wine, or juice, and for occasions that celebrate endurance.

On the belly of the carafe sits an oval medallion with a pair of turtle doves amidst floral vines, engraved in black niello. Every line — the feathers of the doves, the veins of the leaves, the flower stems — has been cut into the silver by hand. By arrangement, the oval medallion can also be left blank: a polished field waiting for an individual engraving instead of being filled with the motif. Turtle doves have always been a symbol of lovers and loyalty.

Material and craftsmanship

Niello inlay work begins with the engraving: every line is cut into the silver by hand. Subsequently, a black inlay is melted into the depressions, sanded flush, and polished — like ink in silver. It bonds firmly with the base metal and forms a unit that lasts for decades. SevChern crafts each carafe in more than 15 steps in its studio in Veliky Ustyug — a northern Russian city that has been considered a center of niello silver art since the 17th century. What is often machine-silvered in the European silver industry is created here as inlay work from deep within the metal.

Use and occasions

A capacity of 1,500 ml makes the carafe a serving piece for the dining table — for water, wine, juice, or whatever is to be served. As a gift, it is particularly suitable for a silver wedding anniversary — 25 years of loyalty, celebrated with a piece that bears the bird of faithfulness. It also fits well as a wedding gift, especially in combination with two beakers from the same turtle dove collection. The collection is designed to be modular: each piece can be reordered separately and bears the same motif.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

The polished silver between the niello bands offers space for an engraving upon review — a date, initials, a dedication. By arrangement, the oval medallion can be left blank as an engraving field, creating space for a family crest, a company emblem, or a personal symbol. Upon request, we will include a personal SilberVerse card in 15 × 10 cm photo format — individually designed, tailored to the occasion, and free of charge.

Care

A soft cloth, lukewarm water — that is enough. Do not use aggressive silver dip baths, as these can attack the niello inlay. The niello is firmly bonded and very robust. Over time, the contrasts between the silver and the niello deepen — a natural process that enhances the piece.
