Material and craftsmanship

The podstakannik, the metal tea glass holder, is a Russian invention dating back to the 18th century. The glass stays hot, the holder protects the hand, and the outer wall becomes a surface for ornamentation. This holder features the equestrian motif of the Sieger collection, centrally set within an oval medallion and surrounded by a braided band and a field of wheat. The dark contours are created by niello: a black inlay fused into the engraved lines, sanded flush, and polished – like ink in silver. Niello is neither lacquer nor paint, but a permanent bond with the silver itself that does not wear off and becomes even more contrasting with polishing. The handle, base, and spoon handle also feature gold plating, providing a warm accent against the cool silver and the deep black of the niello. What distinguishes this set from an ordinary cup is that the crystal glass reveals the tea itself—its color, its infusion, its steam—while the silver holder frames this image.
