The lid, on the other hand, is frosted and bears three symmetrically arranged floral groups: a central group at the front, two offset to the sides. Each group shows a hand-engraved blossom with tendrils and leaves, filled with black niello mass – the contrast between the matte silver background and the melted-in dark line is what distinguishes niello from a mere engraving. The central blossom of each group also features a gilded accent area that brightens up the ornament. The gilding continues along the lower edge of the lid and on the ring-handle, visually connecting the lid and base.
