Inverted Onion Domes 925 Silver — Set of 6 with Tray

Six conical cups with bases shaped like golden onion domes — like the towers of Russian cathedrals. When all six are inverted on the round tray, the arrangement resembles a miniature cathedral with six golden towers. These are Perevörtischi, Russian tumbling cups that can only be set down once they've been emptied — a tradition dating back to Peter the Great, and still practiced today among friends, business partners, and families.

Material and Workmanship

All six cups feature floral niello ornaments on polished 925 silver — black hand-engraving in line relief, fused into the silver surface. The golden domes, the gold rims at the top and bottom, and the gilded center of the tray provide warm accents against the black-and-silver of the niello. The tray itself features a niello rosette in its center, which only becomes visible when all cups are removed — a small surprise for the host who cleans up at the end. The set comes from the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, a center with 340 years of niello tradition. Each cup undergoes several steps, from hand-engraving to niello inlay, gilding, and polishing; slight differences between the six cups are not flaws, but rather the individual signature of the engraving.

This set is intended for occasions where everyone is seated at the table and the toast applies to all. Each cup holds approximately 40 ml, a classic vodka portion: served ice-cold, drunk in one go, and placed inverted on the tray so that at the end, six golden domes point upwards. The onion dome (Russian Луковица) is the most distinctive element of Russian church architecture, from St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow to the wooden churches in the north of the country — on this cup, it becomes a crown that you hold in your hand as long as you drink, and return to its place once you're done. Clean cups and tray by hand with warm water and dry both with a soft cloth. A silver polishing cloth removes tarnish without affecting the gilded domes or the niello ornaments. Avoid using a dishwasher and abrasive cleaners to ensure that the gold and niello retain their contrast permanently.
