Description
Description
Three pieces of 925 sterling silver, a classical line, a manufacturer with three centuries of history: The 925 Silver 3-piece cutlery set from the Elegie line is the conscious, sleek introduction to a table setting that can later be expanded piece by piece. Dinner knife, dinner fork, and dinner spoon — the exact configuration for a main meal, without a teaspoon, without being over-equipped. Whether you're gifting a single sterling silver place setting for a silver wedding anniversary, adding a second person to an existing collection, or wish to delve into the Niello tableware art from Veliky Ustyug yourself, this set offers the most compact entry into the Elegie line.
The set comes in the dark blue original manufacturer's box with the Cyrillic logo "Северная чернь" — the classic packaging SevChern has used for decades. Today, three pieces on the table. Tomorrow, if desired, a single Elegie teaspoon can be added. The day after tomorrow, a second set for a partner. This modularity is precisely the core of this 3-piece set.

Three pieces, one line: the Elegie set as a conscious entry
Choosing a silver cutlery set means opting for a design language. The Elegie line speaks with classicism — slender handle axis, column capital end caps, calm Niello ornamentation. Three pieces are enough to make this language heard at a table: dinner knife, dinner fork, and dinner spoon fully cover the classic main meal configuration. What's missing is the teaspoon — and that's intentional. Those who want dessert or tea can add it later; those who consciously use the set as a main course place setting have all three tools at hand anyway.
This makes the 3-piece set the slimmest, clearest entry into the line. It is suitable for a single premium place setting for a silver wedding anniversary, for expanding an existing 925 silver table collection for a second person — or for anyone who wants to feel how a solid Niello cutlery feels in their hand before expanding to a complete table for six.
What you get in the 3-piece Elegie set — piece by piece
Three pieces, three tasks, three weights. The dinner knife measures approx. 220–225 mm and weighs approx. 61 g — the blade is long enough for clean cuts on steak or roast, the handle feels noticeably solid in the hand. The dinner fork comes with approx. 200–205 mm length and approx. 89 g on four strong tines, the backs of which also bear the Niello leaf tendrils. The dinner spoon, at approx. 103 g, is the heaviest single piece; here too, the back of the bowl is fully engraved and filled with Niello.
In total, the 3-piece 925 silver cutlery set carries approx. 253 g of sterling precious metal — a material density rarely found in the industrial tableware market. Comparable industrial tableware often weighs only 50–70 g per piece. This massiveness is felt with the first grip: the 925 silver cutlery lies calmly, doesn't tip, doesn't seem "artificially heavy," but is balanced along its axis. Precisely this impression distinguishes solid silver tableware from silver-plated imitations — and exactly this material grammar is carried by the Elegie line. Dimensions are understood with a manufacturing tolerance of approximately ±5%.
The Elegie line — classical form, delicate Niello leaf tendrils
The Elegie line is the younger sister of the naturalistic Astra line in the SevChern catalog. While Astra works with floral motifs and round movements, Elegie follows a geometric-architectural logic: column capital end caps close the handle at the top, the handle itself is slender and straight, and the transitions to the bowl or blade follow calm curves. The result is a Niello cutlery that asserts itself equally well on a modern, minimalist table as in a classic dining room.
The Niello leaf tendrils are not only on the visible front of the handle — they continue on the back of the spoon's bowl and the fork's tines. Those who turn the piece over will see the same level of detail. This is not a pressed industrial pattern, but an engraved ornament, in whose depressions the Niello enamel was filled and fixed with heat. This two-sidedness is a distinguishing feature of the Elegie line and one of the reasons why the 3-piece configuration can also be read as a small collector's set: each piece shows the full depth of the ornament.
SevChern from Veliky Ustyug — the Niello manufactory since 1683
Behind the set stands one of Russia's oldest continuously operating Niello manufactories. SevChern (Северная чернь, "Northern Niello") was founded in 1683 in Veliky Ustyug in the Vologda region, the traditional center of Russian Niello art. In 1929, the enterprise was reorganized and continued under Soviet rule; in 1937, the workshop received the state status of "Folk Art Craft" (Народный художественный промысел) — a recognition that formally distinguishes Russian silver cutlery with Niello tradition from industrial tableware.
The manufactory produces each piece through a 15-step process: handle cutting, form pressing, engraving the ornament, applying the Niello enamel made of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, kiln fixing, polishing, hallmarking. The raw materials come from certified 925 sterling silver. For more information on the individual steps, you can find the article "What is Niello — the black enamel in silver" in our magazine, as well as an overview of the heritage history under "Secret 7: History." An overview of the manufactory's story is also available on our theme page "SevChern Secrets."
Three parts today, four tomorrow — how the Elegie set grows with you
The most important difference between an industrially manufactured set and a manufactory line set is expandability. With Elegie, it's built-in: the line includes exactly three products in the shop — the 3-piece set, the 4-piece sister set, and the individual Elegie teaspoon. Those who start with three pieces here have not invested in a dead end.
Specifically, this means: Today, three pieces for the main meal. Tomorrow, if dessert or tea become part of the table routine, the individually available Elegie teaspoon SW11681 completes the set to a full 4-piece place setting — in identical 925 silver Niello craftsmanship, the same classical form, the same leaf tendrils. This upgrade path saves the double purchase of the complete 4-piece sister set and makes the 3-piece silver cutlery set a calculated entry point for a growing collection.
The day after tomorrow, if the table grows, you can add according to the number of people — two 3-piece sets side-by-side for a couple's main meal, three 3-piece sets for a family gathering. If you want all four pieces, including a teaspoon, from the start, you'll find the complete 4-piece Elegie Set SW12695 in a blue wooden lifestyle gift box. Both paths lead to the same goal — the 3-piece set is just the leaner introduction.
Table moment, gift moment, heirloom — occasions for a premium set
Buying 925 silver cutlery almost always means: buying for an occasion. The 3-piece Elegie set covers three main occasion profiles. For a silver wedding anniversary after 25 years of marriage, it is a silver wedding gift with symbolic weight — three pieces, a shared table moment, a line that remains expandable. For a milestone birthday or retirement in the family circle, the set functions as a premium gift that doesn't disappear into a drawer but comes out on Sundays. And as an heirloom — for a daughter, son, or godchild — it's a collection in its infancy: three pieces that can later grow into a complete table setting.
If you want to add a personal touch, the silver cutlery can be refined with an engraving. There is space on the back of the handle of each piece for initials, a wedding date, or a name — the engraving makes the set unique. Upon request, a free SilverVerse card (10x15 cm) can be included, individually inscribed with the words that should accompany the gift. Engraving and card will be shipped together with the original manufacturer's box.
Care, hallmark, personalization — answers about the 3-piece Elegie set
What is Niello and how is the technique applied to the Elegie set?
Niello is a black inlay made from a molten mixture of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is burned into previously engraved depressions. In the Elegie line, the Niello leaf tendrils adorn both the front of the handle and the back of the spoon bowl and fork tines — a detail you won't find in mass-produced industrial goods. The SevChern manufactory has been using this Niello technique since 1683 in Veliky Ustyug, the traditional center of Russian Niello art. More about the technique can be found in the magazine article What is Niello?.
What hallmark does the silver bear, and where is the 925 stamp located?
On the back of the handle of each of the three pieces, there are two hallmarks: the 925 sterling silver stamp as proof of material and the SevChern manufactory hallmark as proof of origin from Veliky Ustyug. Both stamps are clearly visible under magnification and document the sterling status (92.5% pure silver) as well as the originality from the oldest Russian Niello manufactory. More about the practice of reading hallmarks in Secret 3: Hand Engraving.
How do I care for the 3-piece Elegie set — and is it dishwasher safe?
After use, handwash the three pieces with warm water and a mild, pH-neutral dish soap, then dry them immediately with a soft cotton cloth. Dishwasher use is not recommended: aggressive detergents, salt contact, and drying heat attack both the Niello black inlay and the silver surface. Store the set between uses in the supplied manufacturer's box with velvet bed — the windowed cardboard box with the SevChern Cyrillic logo is also the most beautiful display.
What distinguishes the 3-piece from the 4-piece Elegie set?
The 4-piece Elegie set SW12695 additionally includes a teaspoon and comes in a blue wooden lifestyle gift box. The 3-piece set here (dinner knife, dinner fork, dinner spoon) covers the classic main meal configuration and comes in the original manufacturer's box with the SevChern Cyrillic logo — higher-quality heritage packaging, compact in the number of pieces. If you want the teaspoon later, you can add it individually (see next question).
Can I later supplement the 3-piece set with the Elegie teaspoon?
Yes — and that's exactly what the line's architecture is designed for. The individual Elegie teaspoon SW11681 is available separately in the shop, with identical 925 silver Niello craftsmanship and the same classical column capital shape. This allows the 3-piece set to be expanded into a full 4-piece place setting by adding a single piece — without you having to pay double for the sister set. Even two sets side-by-side (for two people's main meal + dessert) are thus calculable.
