Material and craftsmanship
The bowl of this soup ladle is completely gilded on the outside and features a floral niello ornament on the inside along the upper rim: vines and blossoms in the characteristic blue-grey tone produced by the niello technique—a black inlay melted into fine engraved lines, leveled, and polished, like ink in silver. Fine golden contour lines add extra accents. On the faceted handle, the motif is repeated in a single, curved floral medallion. This combination of partial gilding and niello contrast is typical of silverware from the SevChern manufactory.
