Most bottle holders do one thing: hold. This one does two things at once – at the bottom, the bottle stands in an openwork basket, while at the top, a single, widely curved hoop leads to a ring that grips the neck. It's the design of the plain neck-ring holder, but here with a wall that you can see through.

Two techniques in one piece

The basket and hoop are created in completely different ways. The basket is sawn à jour – each opening in the tendril pattern is cut out individually, each edge reworked. The hoop, on the other hand, is drawn and bent from a solid silver rod; it must not have any kinks and must not waver along its entire length.

The fact that both come together in one piece is unusual. The openwork wall appears light, the hoop provides a clear line in contrast – you can tell by looking at the holder that two different techniques were used to craft it.

The lattice

The catalog soberly refers to the pattern as Perforated Grid. What you actually see is a tendril work of interlocking arches, where the openings are not punched holes, but the spaces between the ornament. The difference is not a linguistic one: a punched hole has a smooth edge, a sawn opening has a reworked one. You recognize it faster with your finger than with your eye.

Why a neck ring

A bottle that only stands at the bottom can tip over. The ring at neck height prevents that – and it helps when putting it back: if you put the bottle down after pouring, you hit the ring even without looking. With a heavy bottle on a full table, that's worth more than it sounds.

Material

Two components, two requirements: the hoop must spring without breaking; the basket must be able to be sawn out without tearing. Only solid silver can do both. A plating on a base metal flakes off at the saw cuts and fatigues at the bend. The Italian hallmark of the manufacturer indicates the material.

What it fits

For wine and sparkling wine bottles of standard design. Among the holders with a neck ring, this is the most affordable – and the only one with an ornament.

Without any pattern, but with a mirrored wall, there is the plain neck-ring holder of the same height. If you don't want to fix the bottle, but just place it, you'll find the same tendril pattern without a hoop on the openwork coaster.
