Description

Sometimes, the simpler form is the more challenging one. This bottle coaster has no ornament, no openwork, no edges behind which anything could hide — just a smooth, reflective surface above a profiled base ring. Any irregularity in the silver would be immediately visible. That's precisely why it's a test piece for polishing.

At a Glance

  • Bottle coaster made of 925 sterling silver
  • Diameter approx. 10 cm — silver weight approx. 220 g
  • Smooth, highly polished surface without ornamentation
  • Profiled base ring with a continuous step
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — Manufactory since 1948

What makes it special

The wall is cylindrical and slightly drawn inwards, with the foot protruding beneath it. This step has a purpose: it catches anything that runs down the bottle and keeps it off the table. For chilled wine that produces condensation, this is its actual benefit.

Weighing approx. 220g, this piece contains more silver than the openwork versions — a closed wall simply requires more material. You notice it when you pick it up.

Material

The difference from silver-plated goods is most evident with a reflective surface: A plating cannot be repolished indefinitely because the layer thins out and eventually the base metal shows through. Solid silver can withstand this for generations. The Italian hallmark of the manufacturer confirms this.

What it suits

For wine, sparkling wine, and water bottles. Because it bears no motifs, it matches any place setting — unlike the chased pieces, which bring their own formal language.

With openwork tendrils, there is the à-jour coaster, and larger with a handle, the bottle holder with acanthus.

Where the form comes from

The English name reveals its origin: a coaster is a glidder. In the 18th century, wine bottles were not passed around at the table but were pushed across the table — from guest to guest, clockwise. To prevent the bottle from scratching the polished tabletop, it was given a stand with a smooth base.

The form has remained, but the purpose has changed: today, the bottle stands, and the coaster protects against drips and condensation. The wide base ring, which reappears in all versions, still originates from the time when it had to glide over mahogany.

What goes with it

From the same model series and in the same unadorned style come the Inglese bottle opener and the Inglese champagne cooler. The name "Inglese" at Zaramella stands for the smooth, English-inspired line — those who choose this coaster will find the perfect continuation there.

If you're looking for ornamentation instead, you'll find it in the openwork coaster or the large Acanthus holder. For serving, carafes and pitchers are available in their own category.

As a Gift

A plain piece is a safe choice if you don't know the recipient's taste precisely. It blends in with any table setting and still makes an impression — and it's the best engraving surface among bottle coasters: the smooth wall can accommodate a monogram or a date without any ornament getting in the way.

We coordinate size and placement in advance. Upon request, we can include a SilverVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, currently free of charge.

Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then immediately polish dry — water spots show up fastest on highly polished surfaces. No dishwasher. Tarnishing is not damage, but a reaction with sulfur from the air, and reversible with a silver cloth. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and silverware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every wine bottle fit?

Bottles of typical Bordeaux and Burgundy shapes, yes. Very wide sparkling wine bottles may touch the rim.

Can it be engraved?

Yes — the smooth wall is the best surface for this among bottle coasters. A monogram, date, or a short dedication is possible.

How does it differ from the openwork model?

The à-jour coaster shows the label through the tendrils and weighs less; this one is closed, heavier, and catches condensation.

Is it delivered in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
