You notice it when you lift it, before you even see it: this coaster weighs almost twice as much as one of the same size. The reason is all around it — wide, curved acanthus leaves, not drawn as a line, but embossed as a body. Where more delicate pieces hint at the form, here it is fully sculpted.

Why the weight is visible

385 grams for a diameter of eleven centimeters is unusually heavy. The silver is not in a thicker wall, but in the depth of the relief: each leaf is so far embossed that it casts its own shadow. With shallower relief, less material would be needed — and the piece would look like a patterned band from the side instead of a wreath of leaves.

The leaf tips run freely upwards, without a connecting rim. What looks like a crown from above is a series of individually standing leaves from the side.

The difference to the lighter wreath

The manufacturer produces the acanthus motif in two styles. The coaster with a leaf wreath features narrow, pointed leaves and a matted base plate — it looks lighter and is lighter. This piece here relies on wide, closed leaf surfaces and double the weight.

Those who see both side by side usually decide quickly: they are two temperaments of the same motif.

Material

Deeply embossed relief is the toughest test for the material. The further the metal is pulled out of the surface, the more likely a coating is to crack — at this relief height, it would have no chance. Solid silver withstands the deformation and can then be repolished for generations. The Italian hallmark certifies it.

What it fits

For wine and sparkling wine bottles of standard design. Because there is no restrictive ring at the top, wider bottles also fit.

The same leaf wreath, one size larger and with a carrying handle, is available as an Acanthus holder with a height of approx. 29 cm. Without any ornament, the smooth coaster is the counterpoint.

What goes with it

A piece of this craftsmanship rarely stands alone. Matching trays can be found among the silver trays, wine for decanting among the decanters and jugs. For opening, the manufacturer offers the hammered bottle opener.

Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Do not use a dishwasher. Work between the leaves with a soft brush; in the deep areas, the darker tone can remain — it is what makes the relief three-dimensional. If you polish it away, you remove the depth from the wreath.
