Description
Most bottle coasters are rings: a wall that runs around the top and holds the bottle. This one isn't. Its wreath of leaves flares freely upwards—each acanthus tip stands alone, nothing connects them at the top edge. What looks like a crown from a distance is exactly what gave the manufacturer its model name.
At a glance
- Bottle coaster made of 925 sterling silver
- Height approx. 13 cm, diameter approx. 13 cm — silver weight approx. 200 g
- Wreath of leaves with individually flaring acanthus tips, open in between
- Wide base plate with matted surface and four applied leaf motifs
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948
Why the leaves stand open
A closed top edge would be easier to manufacture and more stable. The open contour has two reasons. The first is optical: the eye follows the leaf tips upwards and transitions into the bottle, instead of ending at an edge. The second is practical—without an upper ring, there's no measure the bottle has to adhere to. What fits is solely determined by the base plate.
Each tip was individually reworked. On a closed ring, you can emboss all around with a punch; with free-standing leaves, each must be held individually.
The matted surface
The base plate is not polished, but roughened—and that is intentional. A matted surface scatters light instead of reflecting it. This makes the four applied leaf motifs stand out without having to be driven deeper. On a high-gloss finish, they would be lost in reflections.
Material
Free-standing leaf tips are the reason why this piece cannot be silver-plated. A plating on base metal tears at such edges as soon as they are bent and reworked. Solid silver can withstand this—and can be repolished for decades without getting thinner. The Italian hallmark of the manufacturer identifies it.
What it fits
For wine and sparkling wine bottles of standard design. Because there is no constricting ring at the top, wider bottles also fit better than with closed coasters.
Simpler and completely without ornament is the smooth coaster; more finely openwork, but with a surrounding wall, the à-jour coaster.
What goes with it
The same foliage adorns the large acanthus holder with carrying handle — it completely encloses the bottle and can be lifted, whereas this coaster stays put. If you place both side by side, you'll see the same motif in two scales.
For opening, the manufacturer offers the hammered bottle opener. Carafes and jugs for pouring are in their own category.
As a gift
This piece stands out even when there's no bottle in it—the wreath of leaves alone adorns the table. This makes it a gift for someone who doesn't put silver away, but leaves it on display.
An engraving is possible on the matted base plate, between the leaf motifs; we advise on placement and size in advance. Upon request, we include a SilverVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, currently free of charge.
Care
Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher. For the wreath of leaves, use a soft brush and do not pull on the tips. Do not polish the matted surface with a silver polishing cloth—this would make it shiny and eliminate the desired contrast. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and silver tableware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hold the bottle securely if there's no ring at the top?
Yes—the bottle stands on the plate, held by the base ring, not the top edge. The wreath of leaves surrounds it without clamping it.
Why isn't the bottom polished?
That is intentional. The matted surface allows the applied leaf motifs to stand out; polished, they would disappear in the reflections.
Solid or silver-plated?
Solid 925 sterling silver with Italian hallmark. We do not carry silver-plated goods.
Is the same motif available in a larger size?
Yes—as a bottle holder approx. 29 cm high with a carrying handle.
Does it come in gift packaging?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
