Description

A bottle coaster protects the tablecloth—that's the practical part. The real reason for a piece like this is different: A bottle presented in silver looks different from one placed directly on wood. The catalog soberly calls the pattern "Perforated Grid"; in reality, it's an openwork tendril design, with each opening sawn by hand.

At a Glance

  • Bottle coaster made of 925 sterling silver
  • Diameter approx. 11 cm — silver weight approx. 120 g
  • Openwork (à jour) walling, tendril pattern with rosettes
  • Profiled base ring as a foot
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — Manufacture since 1948

Why Openwork

A solid silver wall would obscure the bottle. The openwork pattern does the opposite: It frames the label instead of hiding it. For a bottle that makes an impression, that's the difference between packaging and showcasing.

The à-jour work is also the most intricate technique in silversmithing: Each opening is individually sawn out and the edge is refined. What looks like a pattern from the outside is actually dozens of individual cuts.

Material

A silver-plated piece could not be made this way — during sawing and finishing, the plating would chip off at the edges. Solid silver can withstand this, and it can be repolished for decades without becoming thinner. The Italian hallmark of the manufacturer indicates the material.

What it Fits

For standard wine and sparkling wine bottles. The base ring holds the bottle base, and the walling extends just above the shoulder — high enough to hold, low enough to leave the label clear.

Larger and with a handle for carrying, there is the bottle holder with acanthus leaves; simpler and cylindrical is the smooth coaster.

Where the Form Comes From

The English name reveals its origin: coaster means glided. In the 18th century, wine bottles were not passed around the table, but rather pushed across the table — from guest to guest, clockwise. To prevent the bottle from scratching the polished tabletop, it was given a stand with a smooth base.

The form has remained, but the purpose has changed: Today, the bottle stands, and the coaster protects against drips and condensation. The wide base ring, which reappears in all versions, still originates from the time when it had to glide over mahogany.

What Goes With It

For opening, the same manufacturer offers two pieces: the Inglese bottle opener with a smooth handle and the hammered opener, whose surface breaks light into many small reflections. Both are significantly lower in price than this coaster — together they make a gift from a single source.

One step up in size is the Inglese champagne cooler: the same restrained design, made for bottles that need to stay chilled. And if the wine is to be poured from the bottle, the carafes and jugs offer pieces from several manufacturers.

As a Gift

Among silver wine accessories, this is the piece with the lowest entry point — and yet one that you don't see every day. It suits someone who takes wine seriously and already has everything commonly given as a gift: decanters, openers, glasses.

Engraving is possible on the base ring; we advise beforehand on placement and size. Upon request, we will include a SilverVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, currently free of charge.

Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher. The openwork pattern is best cleaned with a soft brush; the darker depth can remain in the recesses — it gives the tendril work a plastic effect.
