There's a type of silver you buy because it stands out – and one you buy because it works. This coaster belongs to the latter. A flat, round plate with a profiled rim, nothing else. It is the most affordable piece the manufacturer makes for bottles, and the entry into a product group that otherwise starts in four figures.

What flat does better

All other bottle coasters from this manufacturer have an upright wall. This holds the bottle sideways – and at the same time dictates how wide it can be. A flat plate does not do that: Any bottle fits here, even a wide champagne bottle that rests on a ring.

The second advantage becomes apparent in the cupboard. A plate can be stacked, a basket cannot. If you have two or three of them, because several bottles are on the table on a long evening, you'll notice the difference when tidying up.

Regarding weight

58 grams is not much for a piece of this size – that should not be concealed here. A flat plate simply requires less material than a drawn wall; the surface supports itself. If you want to feel silver in your hand, opt for one of the more solid pieces, such as the coaster with acanthus leaves at 385 g. If you are looking for a reliable base that you will actually use, this is the right choice.

Material

At 58 grams, the question of why the piece needs to be solid at all is justified. The answer is on the rim: The double-profiled bead is drawn from the sheet metal – a coating on base metal would tear at the edge during this reshaping. And a plate that is actually used is often wiped; a thin layer would wear through after years. The Italian hallmark of the manufacturer identifies the material.

What it fits

For wine, sparkling wine and water bottles of any common design, also for carafes with a wide base. Because it doesn't dictate anything, it is the only one of our coasters where the question of diameter doesn't even arise.

With a surrounding wall for a firmer hold, there is the smooth coaster of approx. 10 cm; with a gilded rim and in the same flat design, the coaster with a gold rim.

Care

Does it hold the bottle securely?

It doesn't hold it sideways – it's flat for that. It protects the table from drips and condensation and places the bottle on a flat surface. If you want side support, you need a piece with a wall.

Solid 925 sterling silver with Italian hallmark. We do not carry silver-plated goods.
