Bottle coaster, 925 sterling silver, square, chased — 14 × 14 cm

A coaster doesn't have to be round just because the bottle is. This one is square, and the difference is greater than it sounds: Where a ring encloses the bottle, a square frames it. The wide chased rim turns it into a picture frame, with the bottle at its center.

What the Square Changes

On a set table, almost everything is at right angles — the edge of the table, the placemat, the napkin. A round coaster breaks this order, a square one fits in. Anyone who likes a strictly set table will notice the difference immediately, even without being able to name it.

Practically speaking, the four corners provide space that a ring does not. Next to the bottle, there is room for the cork.

The Rim

The ornament is not engraved into the surface, but rather crafted as a separate band and applied — you can see it at the edge, where it stands out plastically beyond the mirror. This construction allows for a depth that could not be achieved from flat sheet metal.

The mirror in between is deliberately kept smooth. A continuously chased piece would have no tranquility, and the bottle would stand in a restless field.

One Model, Many Variations

The manufacturer builds this basic form in three sizes and with different rims — smooth, hammered, or, as here, chased. We consciously do not carry the entire range: Two versions that differ only in surface finish do not help with the decision. The chased rim in this size and the plain version one size larger have been selected.

Material

The chased rim is applied, not raised from the surface — and precisely this requires solid silver on both parts. Two silver-plated pieces could not be cleanly soldered: when heated, the plating separates from the base metal, and the seam becomes visible. With solid silver, it disappears. The Italian hallmark identifies the material.

What it Fits

For wine and sparkling wine bottles of conventional design; the indentation accommodates the bottle base. Also suitable as a base for a carafe, as long as its foot fits into the indentation.

Larger and without ornament is the square coaster with 20 × 20 cm; round and with an openwork wall is the à-jour crafted coaster.

Care

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every wine bottle fit into the indentation?

Yes, bottles of common Bordeaux and Burgundy shape. Very wide sparkling wine bottles may protrude beyond the edge of the indentation — they then stand on the mirror, which works but is less stable.

Is the rim soldered on or made from one piece?

Applied. The ornamental band is crafted separately and soldered — only this way can this relief height be achieved.

Solid or silver-plated?

Solid 925 sterling silver with Italian hallmark. We do not carry silver-plated goods.

Is there also a plain version?

Yes — as a square coaster 20 × 20 cm without ornament, in a curved shape.
