Why the Glass is Blue

Cobalt blue in salt cellars is no coincidence, but a tradition – and for a visible reason: White salt against a blue background is instantly recognizable, even by candlelight. In clear glass, it disappears; in blue, it stands out.

The second reason lies in chemistry. Salt is sodium chloride, and chloride permanently attacks silver: Silver chloride forms, which are dull gray spots that cannot be polished away like normal tarnish. Without an insert, the piece would be damaged within months.

Two Bowls, One Device

Why two? On a long table, salt is usually served in duplicate so that no one has to reach for it – that's the older reason. The more practical reason today: one bowl for fine salt, one for coarse salt, or salt and a spice mix side by side.

The branch as a base is more than just a motif. It distributes the weight over two widely separated support surfaces, so that the piece does not tip over when reaching in from one side, despite its height of 19 centimeters.

Material

The handle bears the entire weight – two filled glass bowls and 450 grams of silver, all on a single curved shaft. Here's why solid silver has no alternative: a plating on base metal fatigues at precisely the bend that is stressed every time it is lifted. Solid silver springs back and remains. The Italian hallmark confirms this.

What It's Suitable For

For salt in two varieties, for salt and pepper, for spices. It's a piece for the set table, not for the countertop – at 25 centimeters in length, it takes up space and wants to be seen.

A smaller, single salt cellar with crystal insert in the same design language is available. Shakers instead of open bowls are found in tableware.

Remove the glass inserts for cleaning and wash them separately by hand. Never leave salt residues on the silver – empty and wipe dry after use. No dishwasher, neither for silver nor for the inserts.
