The core of this piece is not silver, but crystal – a clear, irregularly cut cup that looks like a piece of ice. The silver surrounds it: four sweeping acanthus volutes holding it like a hand. And there's a chemical reason why the cup is crystal rather than silver.

Why Salt Doesn't Belong in Silver

Salt is sodium chloride, and chloride attacks silver. Silver chloride forms on the surface – dull, grey spots that cannot be polished away like normal tarnish, because the metal itself has been transformed. A silver salt cellar without an insert would be damaged after a few months.

That's why salt cellars have had a glass or crystal insert since the 18th century. It is not a cost-cutting measure, but the reason why the piece lasts. It is removed for cleaning.

The Crystal

The manufactory refers to the insert as White Crystal. Its surface is deliberately irregular – the facets are not in a geometric pattern, but appear to be naturally grown. Light refracts differently in it than in cut glass: not in sharp reflections, but in soft streaks.

Salt on the Set Table

For Shabbat, challah bread is dipped in salt after the blessing. The interpretation refers to the temple service, where every offering was salted – the bread on the table takes its place. An open salt cellar is the right utensil for this, not a shaker: one dips, one does not sprinkle.

Material

For a piece where the silver is merely a setting, the connection is crucial: the four volutes must hold the insert without clamping it – crystal tolerates no pressure. Solid silver can be bent resiliently enough to support and yet yield; a plating on base metal would tear at the bends. The Italian hallmark confirms this.

What it's Suitable For

For salt, also for coarse sea salt or a spice mixture. Also usable as a small dish for olives or capers — though without the need for the insert.

Care Instructions

What if the insert breaks?

We will inquire about a replacement from the manufacturer. Please contact us in such a case before using a foreign insert – the setting is made to this specific size.

No. That is precisely what the insert protects against – chloride permanently attacks silver.

Solid or plated?

The setting is solid 925 sterling silver with an Italian hallmark. We do not carry plated goods.
