Description

A baluster is that curved column shape, tapering towards the top — familiar from stair railings. Applied to a vase, this means: The eye follows the contour, instead of getting caught on the ornament. This is an advantage for flowers — a calm surface recedes behind a bouquet.

At a Glance

  • Baluster vase made of 925 sterling silver
  • Height approx. 46 cm — silver weight approx. 1.9 kg
  • Chased ornamental band on the shoulder, garlands with umbels
  • Widely flared mouth, gilded inside
  • Beaded edge on mouth rim and foot edge
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — Manufacture since 1948

The Baluster Shape

The baluster — that curved column shape, transitioning from a narrow base into a bulbous body — entered architecture via the Italian Renaissance and from there onto silver. It has a practical core: the mass is at the bottom, the center of gravity is low, and a vase of this height will not tip over, even with a heavy bouquet on top.

At approx. 46 cm, this is not a minor detail. A tall vase with a narrow base and high center of gravity would be a risk on a table; this one stands firmly.

Ornament with Pauses

Unlike the fully worked pieces of the line, the ornament here is concentrated: a circumferential band on the shoulder, a narrower one on the neck, and one on the foot. Large smooth surfaces remain in between.

The band itself shows garlands — hanging floral arrangements between acanthus leaves —, chased by hand, meaning driven into the silver with punches. The smooth zones in between are polished and reflect what is around them: candlelight, flowers, the table.

This alternation is the design principle. A completely chased vase appears restless from a distance; here, the polished surface carries the light, and the ornament sets three clear accents.

The Gilded Mouth

The widely flared mouth is gilded inside. This has the same reason as with silver drinking vessels: gold does not react, neither with flower water nor with moisture, and the inside does not tarnish where it cannot be polished.

Visually, it achieves a second effect. Seen from above, a warm tone lies within the cool silver — a contrast that emphasizes the opening and makes the vase a complete object even without flowers.

Material and Origin

Solid silver is a prerequisite here, not an embellishment: Chasing would not be possible on a plating — it would tear during the process. Solid silver can also be repolished over generations without getting thinner. Hallmarked by the manufacturer in Italy.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The Signature line is the richly chased signature of the house.

Where it Stands

On the console in the entrance, on the sideboard, in the center of a long table. At approx. 46 cm high, it is not a table decoration for a place setting — one does not look over a set table —, but an object for the surface next to it.

With flowers, it holds a tall, upright bouquet: lilies, long-stemmed roses, gladioli. Without flowers, it stands as a solitaire. Both are intended — the proportions of the vase work equally well empty or filled.

Engraving

The smooth zones between the ornamental bands are good engraving surfaces: A monogram on the shoulder below the band, a dedication at the foot. Because the surfaces are curved, we discuss size and position in advance — an engraving on a curve looks different than on a flat surface. Upon request, we include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, currently free of charge.

Occasions

For weddings, silver anniversaries, company anniversaries. As an honor, because a vase of this size has presence and remains permanently visible. An engraved dedication at the foot accompanies it through decades.

Care

By hand with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher. Rinse and dry inside after flower water — the gilding is insensitive, standing moisture never is. Polished surfaces show fingerprints more clearly than chased ones; a soft cloth is sufficient. Tarnishing is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth in the ornamental bands can remain. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and silver dinnerware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fill it with water?

Yes. The inside is gilded and therefore insensitive to flower water. Rinse and dry after use.

Does it stand securely with a heavy bouquet?

Yes. The baluster shape lowers the center of gravity, and with an inherent weight of approx. 1.9 kg, the vase stands stably even with a tall bouquet.

How does it differ from the other 46 cm vase in the line?

The chased vase is entirely ornamented; with this one, the baluster contour carries the effect and the surface remains calmer. Same height, different demeanor.

Solid or silver-plated?

Solid 925 sterling silver with a gilded mouth, not silver-plated. With official Italian hallmark.

Does it come in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.

Three Vases, Three Approaches

The line includes three silver vases, and they differ not in quality, but in their character:

A baluster is that curved column shape that tapers towards the top and flares out again at one point — familiar from stair railings. Applied to a vase, this means: The eye follows the contour, instead of getting caught on the ornament.

This is precisely an advantage for flowers. A calm surface recedes behind a bouquet; a densely chased one competes with it. If you want the vase to stand predominantly empty, you choose the opposite.
