Description

The same height as its sister, but a completely different character: here, the entire body is chased, from the foot over the belly to the neck – not a millimeter without ornament. A tip for the display case: a vase crafted like this looks better empty than filled. A bouquet would obscure exactly what you bought it for.

At a Glance

  • Baluster vase made of 925 sterling silver, fully chased
  • Height approx. 46 cm – silver weight approx. 2.745 kg
  • Continuous acanthus scroll ornament over foot, belly, and neck
  • Widely flared mouth, gilded on the inside
  • Beaded edge on the mouth and foot rim
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua – manufacturer since 1948

Non-stop Chasing

With most pieces in the line, the ornament is on one zone, leaving surfaces free. Not here: the entire body is chased – worked into the silver by hand with punches, section by section, over a curved surface.

This is the more difficult work. On a flat plate, a pattern can be worked evenly; on a doubly curved surface, it distorts if the smith does not guide the punch with the curve. On this piece, you can see that the scrolls follow the form – they narrow towards the neck and widen at the foot, instead of simply being depicted smaller.

The price difference from the more subtly crafted vase of the same height is almost entirely explained by this: more silver, significantly more hours of labor.

What This Means for the Effect

Full-surface chasing removes the mirror from the silver. Where a polished surface reflects light as a single surface, a continuously chased body breaks it into a thousand tiny reflections. The vase doesn't shine – it glimmers.

Therefore, it gains when viewed up close, and from a distance, it appears calmer than expected. This makes it a piece for places where one passes by and stops: console table, display case, library.

The Gilded Mouth

The widely flared mouth is gilded on the inside. Gold reacts neither with flower water nor with moisture; the inside does not tarnish where it cannot be polished. From above, a warm tone lies in the cool, softly glimmering silver – the only calm, smooth area on the entire piece.

Material and Origin

Solid silver is a prerequisite here, not an embellishment: chasing would not be possible on a plating – it would tear during the process. Solid silver can also be re-polished for generations without thinning. Hallmarked by the manufacturer in Italy.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The Signature line is the richly chased hallmark of the house – and this piece is its most distinctive representative.

Where it Stands

On the console table, the sideboard, in the display case. At approx. 46 cm, it is not a table decoration – one cannot see over a set table – but an object for the surface next to it.

With flowers, it holds a tall, upright bouquet. Without flowers, it is complete: a piece whose surface itself is the event needs no content to make an impact.

Engraving

Unlike pieces with clear surfaces, there is no quiet zone for an engraving here – this is a consequence of the continuous chasing. A discreet engraving is possible on the underside of the foot, where it does not disturb the ornament and becomes visible when turned over. We will advise you on this upon request. If desired, we can include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, currently free of charge.

Occasions

For a golden wedding anniversary, a major company anniversary, as an honorary gift. A piece where the effort of craftsmanship reflects the occasion – and which several givers can share.

Care

By hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher. With continuous chasing, thorough drying is especially important – otherwise, moisture will remain in the indentations; a soft brush helps. Rinse the inside after flower water. Tarnishing is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth in the scrolls should remain – on this piece, it is what makes the design visible at all. Polished to a shine, the vase would lose its relief. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and tableware.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it differ from the other 46 cm vase?

With the baluster vase, the curved contour creates the effect, while the wall remains calm. This one is chased over the entire surface – it has a stronger impact as an object, but recedes less behind a bouquet.

Can I fill it with water?

Yes, the inside is gilded and insensitive to flower water. Rinse and dry after use.

Can it be engraved?

Only on the underside of the foot – the body is continuously ornamented. Those who want a visible dedication are better advised to choose a piece with a clear surface.

Solid or plated?

Solid 925 sterling silver with a gilded mouth, not plated. With official Italian hallmark.

Does it come in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality manufacturer's packaging.

The Elaborate Vase

Of the three vases in the line, this is the most elaborate in its surface: the chasing runs over the entire wall, without any smooth zone. At approx. 46 cm high, this results in a very large surface that has been worked by hand with punches.

For comparison, there is the baluster vase of the same height, whose effect comes from its contour, and the pierced amphora at approx. 38 cm.

A tip for the display case: a fully chased vase looks better empty than filled. A bouquet would obscure exactly what you bought it for. Those who primarily want to display it as an object will make the right choice here; those who regularly put flowers in it are better served by the calmer baluster shape.
