Description

An ornament without beginning and without end – that's the idea behind this christening cup made of 925 sterling silver. A grape decorative band of grapes, leaves, and tendrils runs completely around the cup, in niello technique: silver on a black background, without a central point, without a front or back. No face, no saint – just a symbol that is so old that it doesn't belong to any one denomination.

For godparents looking for a meaningful yet inclusive gift, the grape is a motif that appeals equally to religious and secular families. For grandparents who value living tradition, the ornament represents centuries-old craftsmanship from Veliky Ustyug. And for parents who want a cup with depth instead of a cute image, that's exactly the difference: this cup shows a symbol, not an illustration.

Material and Workmanship

925 sterling silver has been the material for drinking vessels for centuries – food-safe, without inner coating, the same material inside and out. The decorative band is created in negative niello: unlike motifs that appear dark on a light background, here the entire background of the band is completely filled with black niello paste, while grapes, leaves, and tendrils stand out as bright silver. Niello itself is a sulfur-silver alloy that is melted into engraved lines and forms a permanent, chemical-physical bond with the silver – not an application, not a lacquer, the drawing is part of the metal. The D-handle remains smooth and undecorated, child-friendly proportioned, and easy to grasp. On the bottom, the cup bears the stamped manufacturer's mark of SevChern from Veliky Ustyug – where niello art has been documented since 1683, its heyday being in the 18th century.

Occasions and Target Groups

The grape is a christening motif that doesn't set a denominational trigger yet carries depth. For families with a religious background, it refers to the image of the vine as a community of faith; for secular families, it remains the oldest image of sweetness, ripeness, and growth. The cup is suitable as a christening gift, a godparent gift, and with its 120 ml, it also accompanies the child's first independent attempts at drinking. Those who know and appreciate the eucharistic symbolism of the grape can also choose it as a gift for first communion.

Engraving and SilberVerse Card

Engraving is possible upon request – with a name, date, or a personal dedication, making the cup personal in addition to being symbolic. For an engraving order, upon request, we include a free SilberVerse card in 15 x 10 cm landscape format: a digitally designed unique photo with a personal text about the occasion and the child.

Care

The outer surface of the cup can be polished with a soft silver polishing cloth. The niello surfaces – the black areas of the decorative band – should not be scrubbed, but only wiped with a soft, dry cloth. When polishing the silver, the contrasts deepen over time: the black becomes richer, the silver brighter. For the inside, lukewarm water is sufficient for rinsing; the cup should not be put in the dishwasher.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the grape symbolize?
It is one of humanity's oldest symbols – in antiquity a sign of fertility and joy of life, in the Christian iconography connected with the concept of the vine as the community of faith. For children and secular families, it simply remains the image of sweetness, growth, and maturation.

Is the cup only suitable for Christian baptisms?
No. The grape is not exclusively associated with any one denomination; it is also found in Jewish symbolism and secular art history. That is precisely why godparents of diverse backgrounds choose this motif – meaningful, without excluding.

What is negative niello, and why is it more complex?
In positive niello, the motifs are black on a light silver background. With this cup, it's the other way around: the background is completely filled in black, and the motif stands out as bright silver. This requires an even niello filling over the entire encircling area – without a central point, equally precise at every point.
