Description
The Christening Gift Set 925 Sterling Silver Niello 3-pc — Orthodox Guardian Angel is a premium collection featuring genuine Niello hand-engraving from the Veliky Ustyug manufactory SevChern: a christening spoon with a figural Guardian Angel niello on the handle, an oval Guardian Angel medallion, and a cross pendant with the Orthodox Christogram "ICXC NIKA" — all made from 925 sterling silver, connected by a white christening cord and delivered in a high-quality gift box.
Unlike figural christening sets with colored enamel (or gilding as an accent), this set relies on the oldest Russian silver art: Niello — a dark alloy melted into hand-engraved lines over an open flame. The lines thus become part of the metal — not a coating, not a print, but like ink in the silver. A figural saint with a halo sits on the handle of the christening spoon, framed by floral Niello ornaments at the top of the handle. The oval medallion features another Guardian Angel as a Niello relief, and the delicate trefoil-cut cross pendant bears the Orthodox Christogram "ICXC NIKA" — loosely translated as "Jesus Christ conquers."
Important Tradition: Niello art in Veliky Ustyug has been documented in writing since 1683. Today, the SevChern manufactory (ZAO Severnaya Chern) continues this Veliky Ustyug Niello tradition — each piece hand-engraved and hand-polished. The Niello hand-engraving with a graver (Shtihel) is the crucial step: each stroke has only one chance, each master's hand bears its own unique signature. Delivered in a high-quality gift box — ready to be presented to a godchild or family.

Niello — what characterizes the three pieces
Niello is one of Europe's oldest silversmithing techniques: a dark alloy is ground into powder, liquefied over an open flame, and melted into the previously hand-engraved lines of the silver. After cooling, the piece is polished in several stages — until the Niello stands out contrastingly from the polished silver surfaces. The dark lines are not a print and not a coating — they are part of the metal itself and become clearer with each polish. In this set, Niello is shown in three variations: on the christening spoon as a figural saint with a halo plus floral handle ornaments, on the medallion as an oval-framed Guardian Angel relief, and on the cross as the Orthodox "ICXC NIKA" Christogram. We call our Niello artworks in the shop Nielloa — a distinct line designation so customers can immediately recognize the premium category. Niello remains the technical term for the technique, Nielloa our name for the line.
Guardian Angel and the Orthodox Christogram
On the christening spoon and the oval medallion, the Guardian Angel appears as a figural Niello relief — the protector who accompanies the child through life. On the cross pendant is the short formula "ICXC NIKA": Iisus Christos NIKA, loosely translated "Jesus Christ conquers." The Christogram is one of the oldest Orthodox symbols and traditionally appears on liturgical bread stamps, icons, and baptismal crosses. On a christening spoon set, the combination of Guardian Angel and Christogram takes on a special depth: the angel as a personal companion, the cross as a symbol of confession. The white christening cord ties both pendants together and makes the set gender-neutral — suitable for a godchild, boy or girl, without a colored designation. This christening tradition is widespread in Russian, Greek, Serbian, Romanian, and Bulgarian Orthodox families, and increasingly also in non-denominational families as a keepsake with symbolic depth.
Related Constellations
For those seeking a mid-tier option with colored enamel instead of Niello, the ArgentA Guardian Angel line offers 2-piece sets (christening spoon + cross pendant, without medallion) in four codings — the Niello variant here is the premium counterpart to the enamel series.
Guardian Angel red enamel (girl coding, ArgentA, 2-pc): Christening spoon with figural Guardian Angel half-relief on red enamel instead of Niello blackening. See Guardian Angel Christening Set red.
Guardian Angel blue enamel (boy coding, ArgentA, 2-pc): Mirror variant with blue enamel as a calm boy coding. See Guardian Angel Christening Set blue.
Guardian Angel gilded (gender-neutral, ArgentA, 2-pc): Festive variant with warm full gilding instead of Niello — modern gold sheen instead of antique-traditional Niello depth. See Guardian Angel Christening Set gilded.
Personalization and Care
The back of the christening spoon handle is polished smooth and engravable — initials, name, or christening/birth date can be added there. The front with the Niello Guardian Angel and the Guardian Angel medallion plus the cross pendant are not additionally engravable — the Niello hand-engraving should remain untouched. With every order, we include a free SilverVerse card. Care by hand with warm water and mild dish soap, dry with a soft cloth. Do not put in the dishwasher — heat and harsh detergents attack the Niello surface and the polished finish. The white christening cord is textile and should only be wiped dry. For the polished silver surfaces, use a soft silver polishing cloth — avoid the Niello lines, they become more contrasting with each gentle polish but do not require intensive treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Niello and how does it differ from enamel or oxidation?
Niello is a dark metal alloy melted into hand-engraved silver lines — the black lines become part of the metal. Enamel (e.g., in the ArgentA Guardian Angel sets) is colored glass flux on the surface, oxidation is purely a patina of the silver surface. Niello is the deepest, most durable, and rarest of the three techniques — and in Europe, it is almost exclusively preserved in the Veliky Ustyug tradition.
What does "ICXC NIKA" on the cross mean?
"ICXC" is the Greek abbreviation for IΗΣΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Jesus Christ), "NIKA" is the ancient Greek word for "conquers." Loosely translated, the Christogram means "Jesus Christ conquers". It is one of the oldest Orthodox symbols and traditionally appears on liturgical bread stamps, baptismal crosses, and icons.
Is the set consecrated by the church?
No — unlike some sets, SevChern does not provide a church consecration certificate. Consecration can be done if desired before the christening directly in the church or by a clergyman. The symbolism (Guardian Angel, Christogram) is Orthodox-compliant, and the form makes the set suitable for any family that values religious depth.
Is the set for a boy or girl?
Both. The white christening cord and the Niello black on silver are deliberately gender-neutral — no pink or blue designation, no gilding accent. This makes the set suitable for godchildren of both genders and also for sibling collections.
How long does Niello last?
With careful maintenance, a lifetime — and longer. Niello is abrasion-resistant and does not fade because the dark mass is part of the metal. With each polish, the contrast between polished silver and Niello lines even becomes clearer. Important: no rough polishes or abrasive cloths directly on the Niello lines — the polished silver surfaces around them can be cared for normally.
Stock 0 — can I still order?
Yes. High-quality Niello silverware is deliberately reordered fresh rather than stored for a long time — silver prices fluctuate, and you receive fresh goods from the current manufactory batch. If currently unavailable, the delivery time is usually around 2–3 weeks. Just write to us, and we will confirm the estimated date.
