Material and craftsmanship

The entire handle is decorated with Russian Orthodox scrollwork that recalls Byzantine knot patterns and frames the Cyrillic inscription. The central motif is a Holy Angel, depicted as a sculptural relief with wings and a halo. The blackening is created by oxidation: The silver is chemically treated to form a dark layer, which is then polished until only the recessed areas remain dark. This creates an antique contrast between the blackened relief and the polished silver, which makes the angel's contours stand out clearly. The bowl of the spoon is also ornamented, ensuring that the baptismal spoon is beautifully designed from every angle. It is crafted by ArgentA, a Russian manufactory specializing in Orthodox sacred silverware.

Use and occasions

This baptismal spoon is primarily intended for Russian Orthodox or Greek Orthodox baptisms, but is also suitable as a birth gift if the baptism takes place at a later date. Other appropriate occasions include the name day, which plays a special role in the Russian Orthodox tradition, as well as Easter, the most important festival in the Orthodox church year. The angel is gender-neutral and therefore equally suitable for boys and girls. For godparents looking for a sacred rather than purely decorative gift, for grandparents who wish to pass on Orthodox traditions, and for families without a specific patron saint for whom a universal guardian angel is a fitting alternative.

The Holy Angel — Symbolism in the Orthodox tradition

In Orthodox iconography, angels play a central role as messengers of God, companions of the soul, and protectors in life. Unlike a specific patron saint, the angel is universal and not tied to a name — it represents the guardian angel that every person receives at baptism according to Orthodox teaching. The Cyrillic inscription "Holy Guardian Angel" reinforces this meaning as a direct blessing that confers divine protection upon the child.

Care

Polish the silver with a soft cloth, taking care not to polish away the blackening — the dark recesses in the relief are intentional and make the motif visible. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents such as vinegar, citric acid, or baking soda, as these can attack the blackening. It is best to store the spoon in the provided gift box, so it will be preserved for generations to come.
