Material and craftsmanship

Niello is a black inlay — like ink in silver. The motif is hand-engraved into the silver, the heated niello compound is applied to the recesses, and the surface is then sanded flush with the polished silver. This creates an image that is part of the metal itself — no coating, no layer of paint. A shamrock ornament at the transition from handle to bowl gives the spoon a unique character. The spoon is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, one of the most significant centers of Russian silverwork since the 17th century — niello pieces from this region have been documented since 1683.
